Our Story The Wreck Racing League or WRL is the sanctioning body for Formula H20 Racing. Formula H2O racing is the action packed sport which combines underwater scooters and scuba diving racing on artificial reefs. The next Formula H2O race will be the Quest for Atocha Gold in Key West Florida November 12th 14th. The race is hosted by the Florida Keys Community College and is made possible by Indian Valley Scuba and Mel Fishers Treasures.
The Quest for Atocha Gold is gearing up to be the largest, most publicized Formula H2O event of the season. This event is certain to leave racers anticipating the start of the 2011 circuit (worldwide race dates are already being scheduled).
As the Shark Whisperer, I spend my time with sharks reading, interpreting and interacting with them using body language and animal communication skills that I honed while working with horses. As I interact and play with the sharks, I examine their environment and study the overall health of the reef and their food chain. From that information, I work to present a realistic picture of sharks so that people can appreciate the importance of the animal to the ecosystem, to the oceans and to our planet.
The Impact By racing in a dynamic sport like Formula H2O, we garner much media attention. This gives us the opportunity to divulge the true nature of the shark and to draw attention to the important role it plays in our ecosystem. In the last race, television broadcast reports show that in the US alone, we had over 8 million total audience impressions.
Moreover, because our entire team works in underwater video production, we are the crew that documents and records most of the video footage that is released to the press. As a result, our message reaches a broad audience which hears our message by visiting our web pages and watching our videos.
With your participation, you directly contribute to that message by offering us the resources we need to document these races.
What We Need & What You Get I race in Formula H2O as the Shark Whisperer. Although visionaries in the scuba industry sponsor us, we also require travel and entry funds to attend, participate in and document the races. The final race of the 2010 season is in Key West and our cost is $1300.
Other Ways You Can Help Please be a part of spreading the word to help sharks by telling your friends about us. Use the share buttons to put us on your Facebook, Twitter and MySpace pages. Get the word out, and together we can all learn from the sharks and help them at the same time.
The easiest way that you can help sharks is to protect their their environment. For example of the ways you can do that is it to eat fish that are caught using sustainable practices. For information on that go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Program. Also, work to minimize your trash as a disturbing amount of plastic products end up in the oceans.
The best way to do something directly is to visit our partner organizations - University of Miami RJ Dunlap Marine Conservation Program and/or Shark Savers and contribute to their programs or participate in their activities.
