About the project

Restless is a documentary that captures a moment in the lives of three women in their early 30s. Turning 30 nowadays is a completely different experience from what it was in our parents generation. Many ideas that were central and stable in their lives, seem far from our reach and not necessarily relevant anymore.
How likely is it to get a permanent position? Does a wedding ring really promise an everlasting relationship? Is this the right moment to have children? Should we rather postpone this to the last minute before the biological clock stops ticking? Are we where we wanted to be professionally at 30?

This documentary is about our generation, our questions and our doubts. Its about our pursuit of making the right choices, our attitude towards life and above all, how it contrasts with that of our mothers.

We have finished our studies, seen the world, worked, partied; we have fallen in love and had our hearts broken. We have the kind of freedom our mothers could only dream of. But despite all this, we often feel lost and restless because with all the freedom we have we sense an increasing pressure to experience it fully.
But how long can we sustain this kind of restless lifestyle? When will we settle for the right choices? And how do we know something is right, or whether something better might come along? What links this generation of women is a feeling of restlessness.

In the last two and a half years I regularly met with the protagonists and accompanied them through their everyday lives, documenting their attempts to find the right path in life in the face of so many choices.
I was about to turn 30 when I started making the film. It was a period in my life with many uncertainties and many questions, thats why I decided to document and share the experience me and other women had. At the same time showing that there has been a major shift between the generation of our mothers and ours.

Many women face these changes in the western world therefore I want to share this project international.

The main characters???

Mona grew up in Nablus (Palestine), moving from Italy to Germany with her parents when she was 16. The daughter of Christian and Muslim parents, Mona is frequently confronted by her background and identity, as she not only has to cope with different cultures, but also the conflicts emerging from both religions. Her search for the right path in life ismarked  by confrontations with her parents, particularly with her strict Muslim father, who has specific expectations of his daughter. During the filming Mona receives a diagnosis that completely changes her life and her priorities, and eclipses her fears that she is somehow missing out on something.

Claudia is 33 years old and lives in Rostock. Shes always had a deep yearning for freedom and self-reliance, driving her to quit her job after a year, and take the plunge into professional independence. To balance her heavy work schedule, Claudia heads out to the Baltic Sea, and gives a free rein to her other passion, kite surfing. This is where she can let her inner child loose, free from outside pressure and expectations. Her eyes sparkle as the wind caresses her skin. Her parents can barely comprehend her life choices and her search for meaning. During filming, Claudia meets a new man.

Claudi lives in Leipzig and was 29 years old when filming began. As we get to know her, we begin to understand her conflicting feelings. She is torn between realizing her own dreams and her loyalty to her mother and the need to make sensible decisions.
Whilst she juggles job worries and her parents criticisms, Claudi meets a new man after two years of singledom. She moves into a new relationship, falls pregnant and suddenly her priorities change. Her life is now shaped by her need for togetherness, stability and trust.

Was wir brauchen:
