Our Story
We will be following several Ecuadorian patients from the Prosthetics For Life Foundation clinic in Ibarra, Ecuador to get a first hand look of how these peoples' lives are changed and improved for the better because of this clinics remarkable work.
Kit Frank, an occupational therapist, and her husband, Bob Frank, a certified prosthetist/orthotist, who helped to create the clinic, "Prosthetics For Life Foundation", work with patients who have lost limbs from such things as poor medical treatment or accidents by fitting them with prosthetic arms and legs that would normally be discarded in the United States. Bob and Kit, along with fellow travelers, personally fly the prosthetics down to South America in boxes of checked baggage. We will be one of those fellow travelers.
The idea behind this film is to create sustainability for the clinic in Ecuador so that it can continue to function and bring in Government funding without outside help. We will be creating this project specifically for the clinic and for the Foundation to better help them move into a more viable and self efficient business.
Who are we?
My name is Jaime Byrd. I'm a documentary and narrative filmmaker from North Carolina and I'll be traveling to Ecuador with my Producer, Adam J. Cohen, to direct and create this film while living and working intimately with our hosts and their patients.

Some of my projects have won awards, including my work in other documentaries, and a best editing award for my bilingual (Spanish/English) web series. Also, my inspirational short documentary, "Slow Down and Fast", has influenced and motivated people all around the globe and has sparked interests even from the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). My other short documentary movie "Shoe Shine Man", has won three awards and has been praised for taking a different and intimate look at poverty and racism in the south.
I feel that I will bring something special and helpful to this project and believe my true interest and compassion for what the Prosthetics For Life Foundation does for others will help me bring that message forward in a visual way that will encourage more people to get involved and bring more money to the clinic.
The Impact
My objective, as a filmmaker, is to create a film that will work as a tool to not only bring awareness to the great need of recycled prosthetics, but to also be used as a professional presentation to government officials in Ecuador to further bring money to this clinic and others like it. A tool like this is invaluable for the Prosthetics For Life Foundation Clinic and will, in the long run, help to bring more sustainability to these facilities all over the world.
What We Need & What You Get
We are in the pre-production stage of the film and will start shooting right before our flight leaves on New Years eve 2011 to Ibarra Ecuador. We will need funding to cover our production costs, travel expenses, and our gear rental. We will also need to license music and pay for post production costs including editing, sound mixing, color grading, art work and translations.
We will have some amazing and great perks for your contributions also! Including copies of the finished film, paintings by the director, and hand crafted art from some of the wonderful artisans of Ecuador.
Please note that while $6,000 is our goal, any money raised beyond that goal will be put to great use; more money means more opportunities for us to film longer, travel to other locations - including us joining Bob and Kit to Peru to shoot more at another clinic, and more budget for post production. This will ultimately result in more content and better awareness for the Prosthetics for Life foundation!
For donations of $200 or more, we can offer a tax deduction through a non-profit organization. Please contact our producer, Adam J. Cohen, directly so we may arrange this need for you and your accountant
