"That's Freddie Brooks, Fred Smith's old sidekick, he did all Fred's dirty work..." - Ron Asheton of the Stooges
Besides once proudly executing Fred's so-called "dirty work", I'm a veteran Detroit music producer with credits including recordings by Patti Smith ("Don't Smoke In Bed"); Fred "Sonic" Smith (Sweet Nothing and City Slang); former Was/Not Was keyboardist Luis Resto (Combo De Momento); a compilation album featuring the music of Carolyn Striho, Luis Resto and David McMurray (Secrets & Space) and a veritable trove of Detroit Energy Asylum recordings.
The MC5 documentary is an absolute masterpiece and David Thomas and Laurel Legler deserve high praise both for their creativity and for
their valiant struggle to make this tremendous film a reality.
And Fred "Sonic" Smith and Rob Tyner deserve to be recognized as two of Detroit's all-time great songwriters and musicians; at this moment in time there's no greater way to honor them than by releasing this monumental documentary film.
