A Hmong immigrant is convicted of killing six white hunters in a violent confrontation during deer hunting season in northwestern Wisconsin. Was it a racial incident? Was it the random act of a madman? Part courtroom drama, part intimate portrait, this hour-long documentary looks at the root causes and the reverberating impacts of this tragedy, bringing into high relief the simmering tensions racial, cultural, economic that lurk in Americas heartland.
The purpose of this documentary, co-directed by Mark Tang and Lu Lippold, is to examine the insidious racism that persists in rural America, in particular against Asian immigrants, in the hope of preventing a recurrence of this kind of tragedy. In screening the rough cut for small groups, we’ve been encouraged at the discussions that ensue. A non-profit group called Generous Alternatives is using the documentary to inspire honest conversations about race and racism.
We have completed a one-hour cut with funding from The Jerome Foundation and the Center for Asian American Media. Now we’re seeking $10,000 in finishing funds. We invite you to donate toward that goal and help us tackle this country’s most persistent challenge: eliminating racism.
