On Your Mark, Get Set, MOW! - A Tale of Hope,
Redemption, and Lawn Mower Racing. A documentary which will show how
USLMRA lawn mower racing is on the "cutting edge" in the battle against
Huntington's Disease.
The Mikula family of Western Michigan have lost six members of their
family to Huntington's disease and use the sport of lawn mower racing to
raise money for the Huntington's Disease Society of America. In an
effort to define what Huntington's disease is I have on camera
interviews with three medical professionals who have either a
professional or personal relationship with the disease. I have also
documented legislative efforts to pass the Huntington's Disease Parity
Act of 2009 with on camera interviews with Congressmen Filner and
Hoekstra as well as HD advocates and lobbyists. Woodstock performer Arlo Guthrie whose father, American folk icon Woody Guthrie died of Huntington's disease in 1967, explained on camera what it is like to live with someone who has the disease and his mother's role as one of the pioneers in HD advocacy.
The sport of lawn mower racing is enjoyed by a wide variety of Americans
with little regard to age, sex, or economic class. It is a fast,
exciting, and most importantly an affordable motor sport. Dozens of
racers organized into different classes compete for trophies and
bragging rights as there are no cash purses. Racers who desire to claim the title of national champion
participate in a series of national points races held though out the
eastern and mid west areas of America. Some racers will travel as much
as 20 hours at their own expense to compete in these events.
On Your Mark, Get Set, MOW! will be a feature length film shot on digital video as well as super 8 and 16mm film. Post production is underway and the film will be edited by John Kinhart who was one of the editors on THE MORMON PROPOSITION which premiered at Sundance in 2010.
The money is being raised to pay my editor and other post production costs such as film lab fees.
In addition to donating posting this page to the various social media outlets would be a HUGE help in getting the word out and possibly generating more donations.
