Our Story

I'm Rik Deskin, the Artistic Director of Eclectic Theater Company. I am the Curator of all Theatre, Improv, Stand-Up and Sketch Comedy programming at the Odd Duck Studio, a 49-seat Black-Box theater venue in Seattle, WA that is an artistic home to many theatre artists in the Puget Sound area. We also rent out the theater to itinerant Theatre companies and Improv groups. In July, a theatre company that had planned to rent the theater in August, cancelled and for various reasons, three of our regular Improv groups also cancelled previously scheduled performances. This left us little time to rebook the slots that had been on hold and suddenly without anticipated vital rental and box-office income that was needed to maintain our basic expense of monthly rent. And it put us behind in rent for July.

The property management company that we pay a monthly rent of $1500 has agreed not to add any more late fees if we can pay this month's rent plus what is still due from last month amounting to $2075.69 by Monday, August 15.

The Impact

It is vital that the Odd Duck Studio remain sustainable as it is a venue utilized by many performers in and around Seattle for shows, rehearsals, classes and more. And it is a regular destination for patrons locally and tourists seeking out unique and interesting entertainment. Currently there are 7 shows playing throughout August that include Zelda, The Comedy Workshop, Brown Bag Comedy, Drop The Root Beer & Run, Closet Monsters Improv, Seattle Monthly Mash-Up and The Big Bully Comedy Show. Every Tuesday night, a Playwrights group called WARP meets to read new plays being developed by local Playwrights. September Skies is a new play by a Seattle Playwright that is currently in rehearsals for a 5 week run that previews September 1. In upcoming months we also offer a number of Free Staged readings of new Plays and Screenplays. We literally have shows playing every week, year-round. We also lease out one of our three studio spaces to Alleged Tattoo, an independent tattoo studio owned by local graphic artist, Lisa Orth. If we are unable to complete this campaign, it may result in being evicted and the loss of a vital space used by and loved by many artists and audience members.
