We are thrilled to announce that OUT ON A LIMB has met its original IndieGoGo goal! We thank you! Your support has inspired us and further convinced us that there is a need for this story to be told. We have a new Bronze Sponsor as well as many new individuals and prosthetic clinic contributors-- and we love all you prosthetists who have joined in to support us.
We re going to fundraise to the bitter end, because although the goal was met, the cost of actually finishing the film is substantially higher. What weve raised so far will go towards the sound mix and color correction, but wont take care of other expenses such as titles, music, and purchasing archival footage. Every dollar raised beyond the goal will go toward these big-ticket expenses and get the film done faster! Again, we THANK YOU!
UPDATE: We're proud to welcome Advanced Prosthetics as a new Bronze Sponsor! "Advanced Prosthetics is proud to be a small part of this and envision
this documentary touching and educating many amputees and non amputees
alike."
UPDATE: We're proud to announce that OSSUR is becoming a Bronze Sponsor!
UPDATE: "Scheck & Siress in the Chicago area is proud to support this project for the amputees we serve and technologies we rely upon." Thank you to Scheck & Siress for becoming one of our Sponsors!
UPDATE: New perks and sponsorship levels! For Business Sponsor Package info contact us at the bottom of this page.*
UPDATE: Go to our News Page at http://www.outonalimbdocumentary.com to see our new interview with Michael Goldfarb, Director of the Center for Intelligent Mechatronics ar Vanderbilt University. Featured in OUT ON A LIMB, Goldfarb is a scientist working on the next generation of prosthetics.
UPDATE: See our write up on oandp.com, and what the executive director of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists has to say about the film. Some excerpts:
"Out on a Limb, a new documentary about the science of prosthetics, is nearing completion. In this film, Producer and Director Daria Price explores the science that is changing what it means to lose a limb...
"'I have seen a clip of Out on a Limb and believe it will help people to better understand the life of those who need a prosthetic,' Peter Rosenstein, executive director of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (the Academy), said. Incredible advances are being made in the unique field of orthotics and prosthetics. The men and women who provide this care are some of the most dedicated medical professionals I have ever worked with and they truly believe that everyone deserves the chance to live their life to the fullest and are working to making that possible.'"

I have been making this documentary for several years. It all began when I met a remarkable man, who despite having lost both of his arms and legs -- could rise from his wheelchair and walk and tell me that he thought he had a better life than most of the people he knew. Prosthetics are not what made him remarkable, but they have given him the freedom to live his life as fully as he does. And thats what struck me that very first daywhat a fascinating and liberating technology this was, with the power to impact so many lives profoundly.
Since then, as this project has taken me across the country, I have met many more remarkable peoplefrom groundbreaking scientists and dedicated prosthetists to soldiers who have lost limbs and children who were born without them. And since then, just as I started to make this film, advances in prosthetics have been occurring at a faster rate than ever before.
Now this film is almost done and I'm asking you to go out on a limb to get it over the finish line by contributing to the finishing funds. OUT ON A LIMB is a fiscally sponsored project of the International Documentary Association, a non-profit organization, so your donations can be tax-deductible.
THE STORY
From Walter Reed Army Medical Center to university labs across the country to the Amputee Coalitions camp for kids, OUT ON A LIMB takes us on a trip through an intriguing science that is transforming lives as it changes what it means to lose a limb. What was futuristic just a few years ago is occurring now. Why now? Advances in prosthetics always coincide with wars, but developments in robotics and neuroscience are sending a synergistic mix out of the lab and onto the bodies of amputees.
Sometimes advances in the field come from amputees themselves. One of them is Van Phillips. Years ago he threw away his own first prosthetic foot and with it the conventional dogma of the day that a prosthetic foot should look like a foot. Studying how animals run and the dynamics of motion, he invented the Flex-Foot and Cheetah Foot, revolutionizing prosthetic foot design.
Soldiers receive the most media attention and the most advanced prosthetics, but they are a fraction of the 2 million amputees in the US alone. In fact amputees are invisibly all around us; every day 507 Americans lose a limb, a number set to explode with the diabetes epidemic. Many millions more around the world lose limbs to landmines, disease, wars and earthquakes.
So who will this transformative science actually reach? And who is still fighting for prosthetics that have been available for years? In America, its often easier to replace a failing organ than to replace a failing prosthesis.
In addition to being a fascinating journey into a science few know much about, this documentary shows how advanced prosthetics can trickle down from soldiers to civilians, and why medical insurance must be improved to cover prosthetics that have been available for years.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
OUT ON A LIMB is close to completion; its current status is a fine cut. But we need your help to cover the remainder of post-production costs, which include color-correction, graphics, sound design and audio mixing. $12,000 will get the film close; more will get it over the finish line faster and ready for release in the fall of 2011.
YOU GIVE AND YOU GET
The good news is your donations are tax deductible. OUT ON A LIMB is a fiscally-sponsored project of the International Documentary Association (IDA), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Contributions made on behalf of OUT ON A LIMB are payable to IDA and are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law. The Perks at the right side of this page show the legally allowed amounts for each level or if you prefer to decline the perks, you can deduct the full amount of your contribution.
