Overview
This amazing project exposes the unknown history of black women in rock and celebrates their contribution to rock music in the only way they know, Nice & Rough.
This honest, provocative dialogue honors the true spirit of the American dream, which is freedom to pursue our goals and not be limited by race or gender.
Nice & Rough continues production, and is slated for completion next year.
Our Story
I headed to the east coast to film the first shoot for "Nice &
Rough," in October of 2008, about the same time the banks crashed. I questioned my reasoning for moving forward with an indie project
during the worst economic recession of our nation's history. But the
deeper I delve into this project the more people and resources that appear to
ensure its completion. Bryant Lemelle, my cinematographer; Stefaniah
McGowan of Stef Angel Music Group, my music supervisor and concert tour
producer. . . and all the black women in rock who have emerged since I put out
the call more than 2 years ago. I am so inspired by their raw courage, this film has become my "calling:
This very special project has uncovered an powerful community of women who refuse to conform to industry expectations; women who insist on exercising their freedom to express their authentic, artistic selves.
The Impact
At some point in each of my interviews I ask, "How many black women in rock do you think there are?" Answers have ranged as low as 5, and only as high as 25. In fact, there are more black women in rock, past and present, than you would ever guess. Think of the impact of discovering you are not alone, of being affirmed and encouraged by a community you never imagined existed. I receive letters from black women in rock from all over the world who are astounded to have their existence finally documented and reflected in film.
Beyond
the obvious benefit to this community of women, Nice & Rough conveys a
universal message. It provides a unique perspective, and a rare look at
the lives of women who perform rock. This film poses important questions that will prompt the audience to rethink how
we experience music and each other. Like music, this film has the power to bring people together. It's an important part of music history that must be shared.
What We Need & What You Get
These funds will be used to pay my awesome crew (who need and deserve to be paid for their expertise and hard work), and for accommodations, travel, and equipment needs for our east coast shoots, slated for Spring, 2012.
