Our Story
UpBeat NYC provides free
music programming to children living in the South Bronx, the nation’s poorest
congressional district. UpBeat has been active for the past three years and has
gained the support of local families that share its vision of cultivating an inspired
and productive generation of local youth citizens and artists.
Established in 2009 by Liza Austria and Richard Miller, UpBeat’s genesis was
sparked by Venezuela’s “El Sistema,” which seeks to break the cycle of poverty
through musical development. All UpBeat participants engage in intensive study
of at least one musical instrument and learn the skills of citizenry and
personal growth through the challenges of group music making.
What We Do
Our program offers year-round, twice weekly instrumental and vocal instruction to children and youth. Enrollment is on a first come, first served basis and no auditions are held.
Studying individually as well as in group settings, participants learn the fundamentals of musical literacy and instrumental performance. Four to six year olds learn musical concepts through singing and movement and are introduced to recorder and piano performance technique. Older students ages 7 and up receive instruction on piano, violin, trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, guitar or drums.
All students perform as soloists and in ensembles for their peers and community. Ensemble playing allows students to experience the joys and challenges of large scale music making with every ensemble's success depending on the hard work and cooperation of each of its members. UpBeat ensembles create opportunities for its members to engage one another as interdependent thinkers and artists.
UpBeat strives to provide a safe and loving environment to develop pride in personal achievement and nurture each participant as a unique contributor to UpBeat’s musical family.
The Impact
Our program's site is in the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx, a neighborhood known for its high rates of poverty, crime, teen pregnancy and infant mortality. Our students' stories of shootings on their blocks and in their playgrounds echo the often harsh and dangerous conditions they face in their daily lives.
UpBeat provides a safe, positive environment in a neighborhood that offers few alternatives to the drugs and violence of its streets. Playing music together gives our students an outlet to express their individuality while building strong bonds with their peers and teachers. Our participants’
blossoming sense of accomplishment has turned indifference into engagement and
joy. Parents marvel at their children’s persistence and enthusiasm. Everyone
involved feels the gravity of this project and is compelled to continue and expand its scope.
What We Need
Funds received through this campaign will go towards the organization's general operating expenses for its 2012 season. UpBeat is made up of many volunteers and a few part time staff so administrative costs are minimal. Expenses include part time wages for core teachers, instrument purchases and maintenance, music lesson books, healthy snacks, web fees, printing, etc.
UpBeat was chosen as one of this year's Union Square Award recipients. We are honored to be recognized by this wonderful foundation that has provided crucial support to so many of New York City's grassroots arts and social justice organizations. This award will go a long way in helping UpBeat NYC continue its work.
While much of the budget is covered by foundations, our organization relies heavily on the support of individuals. From volunteering to instrument and monetary donations, UpBeat continues to thrive as a grassroots initiative made possible by many thoughtful, generous supporters.
