About Nathan P. Murphy's and The Blues Clinic
Nathan P. Murphy's
When Nathan P. Murphy's first opened its door 30 years ago, owner and founder Bob Martin defied the odds and chose downtown Springfield, MO to be the home to best in jazz and blues. The club's first national touring act was none other than Buddy Rich. He has since showcased the likes of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Count Basie's Orchestra, the late Maynard Ferguson, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, John Mayall, Tommy Castro and Joe Bonamassa...just to mention a few.
Nathan P. Murphy's has remained the anchor for downtown Springfield as the town continues to grow and continue to sprout up in the area.
The Blues Clinic
Seventeen years ago Bob Martin was invited as a guest to share his expertise of artists and musicians with radio listeners.. and has been on air ever since. Springfield was quick to recognize Bob's knowledge and love of music in combination with his genuine love of his town and its residents. Bob, better known as Dr. Bob, has answered to record breaking ratings year after year.
Our Story-What Happened
Nearly five years ago Dr. Bob was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease C.O.P.D. Dr. Bob is a non smoker. The cause was exposure to second hand smoke. The national acts the club was once famous for came to a halt as Dr. Bob privately focused on his health. He nearly lost his life. Dr. Bob now only has 53% of his lung capacity. Consequently, Murphy's became the first smoke free venue in downtown Springfield and as he healed, Dr. Bob resumed booking talented artists and musicians. As Dr. Bob and his club were making a comeback, the economy fell to despair. As a result, the club was hit with another devastating blow. As most of America struggled to recover from this recession, very few indulged arts and entertainment.
As the club continued to suffer, Dr. Bob's radio program continued to grow in the ratings. It was obvious that Springfield, MO had the Blues. What most of Dr. Bob's listeners don't realize is that Dr. Bob's position at the Blues Clinic is a labor of love...in other words...an unpaid position. For 17 years on air Dr. Bob has dedicated his shows to his love of music and his fans.
What all of this means to Dr. Bob, Nathan P. Murphy's and You
With nothing coming in from his time on air and the staggering decline in patrons to the club, Dr. Bob and his Blues Clinic aka Nathan P. Murphy's have become the latest victims in this perilous economy and are now facing foreclosure.
If foreclosed upon Bob Martin will lose his home, Dr. Bob will lose his Blue Clinic, his fans will lose their Sunday morning shot of the Blues, and Springfield will lose 30 years of history.
