Our Story

Motley Dance is a dance theater company that develops artistic works with multidisciplinary collaborators. Over the past year the company artists have been building an experiential DANCE INSTALLATION. We have presented chapters at Dance New Amsterdam, Movement Research at The Judson Church, Triskelion Arts Center and Rooftop Dance. Happily, we have found a home for our full-length production at Causey Contemporary Gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn! The 2000 square foot gallery space, located at 92 Wythe Avenue, will present I Just Want To See You Underwater  September 22- 24th, 2011. We need your help reaching our financial goals that will ensure a successful production!

The Project -The Impact

I Just Want to See you Underwater- A Multidisciplinary Installation Work

Motley Dance aspires to present an integrated artistic experience in a gallery environment. There is no stage, allowing the action to occur at the same level as the audience. You will be invited to walk through the space, becoming an intimate witness rather than a passive spectator. Live, original music by Colonna Sonora (keyboards, percussion, electric bass, guitar, pre-recorded sound/ text ) will envelop the audience. Stop-motion photography and real-time film by Victoria Masters will be projected on an expansive gallery wall. Choreography from Motley Dance will wind and coil throughout the gallery. The integration of these elements will produce an immersive experience for the audience and performers alike.

This project was initially inspired by  a watercolor-like hallucination I experienced while affected by the brain disease Encephalitis. Underwater also examines the logistical and emotional repercussions of Prosopagnosia (face blindness) and studies the challenges of a pre-lingual deaf person to communicate. Performers present a confused, backwards form. The movement vocabulary ranges from fluid, calligraphic strokes evoking watery impressions, to aggressive motions reminiscent of neurological dysfunction. White flour, beans, ribbons, lights maneuvered by the dancers, as well as frequent costume changes work collectively as variable installation elements. Both scenic and narrative environments shift constantly throughout the work in response to themes of impermanence. Characters search for familiarity in each other's faces as Underwater ultimately examines the social, scientific and personal ramifications of experiencing disorientation.
