Our Story
In July 2011, us 4 chaps and one lovely lady (Mongolia 5) will set out from Goodwood Racecourse in Sussex in a generously donated, trusty ambulance and drive all the way to Ulaanbaataar, Mongolia. That's through 3 deserts and some of the most inhospitable environments in the world. 10,000 miles.
Why? To raise a steaming great pile of cash for Breakthrough Breast Cancer, a charity devoted to scientific research, education and campaigning, whilst delivering a fully functional working service vehicle to be used in Mongolia helping those who need it there. All the members of the team have had women they love go through the rollercoaster of this cruel disease. Two of us have lost our mothers to it. It's a very personal quest for us.
We are doing this as part of the famous Mongol Rally, a charity race across some of the wildest and remote places on earth which raises hundreds of thousands of pounds for worthy causes each year.
You can read a bit from each team member of here about their involvement and why they're doing it. We've been planning this for nearly 2 years. You can follow our blogs and story over at our website: http://mongolia5.com.
We've already had some lovely messages from celebrities including Sir David 'Delboy' Jason and even Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II!. What better endorsement than that. :)
Our very first press release too!
The Impact
What We Need & What You Get
- Airline Tickets back to the UK from Mongolia upon completing the handover of our beloved vehicle. We're not looking for 1st class here, we'll go Indiana Jones style in the back with a load of chickens if need be (as long as we're not dumped in a river having used an inflatable boat as a parachute). Projected cost - $4500
- Fuel for our vehicle as we travel across the world to Mongolia. It gets cheaper the further east we go. Projected cost $1300
- Vehicle maintentance, before and during the journey. Our queen of the road is in superb condition, considering she's something of a senior citizen, but we'll need a few bucks to keep her singing in tune. Projected cost - $400
- Team Sustinance and accomodation. We're going to be rough camping most of the time, with the occasional hostel/camp site stop/wifi plunder to update our online coverage and obviously we're going to need to eat and drink. We have no special dietary requirements beyond one simple golden rule - no sprouts! Projected cost - $700
- Visas. Visa's for Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia all require visa's to enter and travel through. We've paid these already out of our own pockets. Projected cost - $650
- Innoculations: Risks of disease and infection are higher in some of the areas we're going. Most have been provided by our lovely NHS free of charge but some specialist ones are needed also. Projected cost - $150
- Insurance and dodgy officials: Our vehicle needs insuring. We've got to purchase insurance in certain countries along the way. If we get pulled over and asked for 'presents' from local law enforcement, we'll need to have a few notes to play with. Projected cost - $200
- Data costs: We're a live blogging, multimedia behemouth on the road. Twitter, Facebook, Mongolia 5 website, Tumblr, YouTube pages all getting updated along the road. We're looking for some help contributing towards the phone bill. Projected cost - $200
- Carbon Offsetting: Unavoidably, we're going to be creating 13 tonnes of CO2 driving to, and flying back from,. Mongolia. We want our journey to have the least possible environmental impact, so we'll be offsetting this via a small investment in Climate Care's sustainable low and zero carbon projects. Projected cost - $100
