“Miss Representation” explores women’s under-representation in positions of power and influence in America by challenging the limited portrayal of women as encouraged by the mainstream media. As the most persuasive and pervasive force in our culture, the media dictates cultural values and gender norms, which in turn seep into our subconscious and impact both our attitudes and actions. In this climate of dangerous stereotypes and rigid gender roles, women are trivialized, objectified, and rarely viewed as powerful figures—making it more difficult for many women to feel powerful themselves. Accompanied by a collaborative social outreach campaign, “Miss Representation” will celebrate women’s progress across America and empower our audience to take action for transformative social change.
