Our Story

Seven years ago, I set out to make a film about Jason Miller, a local celebrity from my hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Best known for his performance as Father Karras in The Exorcist, Jason Miller was an equally talented writer who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1973 for his play That Championship Season.

Miller experienced a brief but brilliant period of national acclaim, then curiously abandoned Hollywood to return to his hometown of Scranton. The town reveled in the presence of its local celebrity but not many understood why he had come back. Why did this Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright who experienced such explosive beginnings never write a Broadway play again? And what happened to Jason in Hollywood that would make him run away?

When Miller died in 2001, I set out with a camera to explore the complex relationship between Miller and Scranton, and the reasons for his return. My search took me from the Catholic school Miller attended as a boy to the local bars of Scranton where his drinking earned him a reputation for petulance. From the streets of Scranton, I traveled to Broadway and Hollywood, talking to the women who loved him and the celebrities who both respected him and lamented his shortcomings. Actors, such as Bruce Dern, Paul Sorvino, and Martin Sheen, talk about the Jason Miller they knew and loved, about his intense talent and tragic demise.

The film follows Jason Millers incurable self-suffering, from the pinnacle of success in 1973 to the decade-long obsession to make a film based on his award-winning play, That Championship Season. Written by Miller at age 32, the play is about four middle-aged men from Scranton who cling onto the memories of their glory days of their youth while their lives are riddled with failed expectations. The storys themes of youthful promise, failed dreams and alcoholism would come to define Jason Miller throughout his life. A revival of play starring Kiefer Sutherland, Chris Noth, Jim Gaffigan, Brian Cox, and Jason Patric (Jason Miller's son) is currently playing on Broadway.

While Miller became largely forgotten by the world, he remains, even after death, a haunting presence in Scranton. Unlike a traditional biography film, Millers Tale uses elements of cinema verit, travelogue, and first-person narration to examine the themes that weave our lives together: dreams of success, personal failure, and hometown pride.

What We Need & What You Get

Since Miller's Tale began airing on PBS stations in March, we've been receiving many requests for DVDs of the film. We have decided to create and distribute the DVDs ourselves, but our production budget is completely exhausted and we have no funds to create the DVDs. We need $5,000, to cover expenses like paying off some of our production debt, acquiring DVD archival footage rights, recording and editing a commentary track, DVD design, encoding, duplication, distribution, and more. Whatever funds we raise here will go toward this process.

DVDs will include the hour-long film and multiple Special Features, such as a director's commentary, several deleted scenes, my student film Birthday (which captures Jason Miller in one of his final performances on film), and more. By buying your DVD copies now, you are ensuring that Miller's Tale DVDs are completed and sent to you as soon as possible. We plan to have them delivered to you by August 2011.
