SYNOPSIS:
Seventeen-year-old Greg Serling wakes up one morning to an inexplicable illness that transforms him into the unimaginable--a hideous, human-sized cockroach. His parents come home to discover him afraid and hiding from his new form and are now faced with the decision of accepting a monster in their suburban home or exterminating their own son.
ABOUT THIS PROJECT:
"Metamorphosis" is a short Dramatic/Thriller inspired by Franz Kafka's literary classic "The Metamorphosis." Production will begin in late July 2011 in Los Angeles, California. Through intense drama between the protagonists and realistic visual effects, the audience will feel the pain and suffering a family experiences as a son reveals his new self to his parents. The audience will gain insight to how his parents deal with that revelation. And most importantly learn how fear, misunderstanding and a lack of acceptance can have a tragic and irreversible outcome.
In order to realistically capture the transformation, visual effects guru Chris Stever joins the team with the knowledge and skills he acquired from his mentor, Gregory Smith, the special effects artist behind the sinister Creeper in "Jeeper's Creepers" and the legendary Green Goblin in "Spider-man."
The psychological aspect of Franz Kafka's short story is unsettling enough. We can't just show a teenager transforming into a cockroach from his perspective, we also have to see it from his parents' point of view. Jason Goldberg, writer, was raised on episodes of Rod Serling's "Twilight Zone" and there are definitely thematic elements of the pivotal anthology series in the film.
We are making this film with a very direct social message; it is a metaphor for being different, change, and most importantly how fear can make us do harmful things to others and to ourselves. We are also fans of the classics; we love practical visual effects. We thrive off that unsettling feeling you get when a movie takes you out of your comfort zone. However, "Metamorphosis" is much more than an effects driven film. At the heart of the story, it addresses issues like the importance of acceptance; consequence of actions and in the end will make you question your own fears and prejudices. Our passion and goal is to create an entertaining film that moves you.
