Mercedes Sosa (1935-2009) was one of the greatest Latin American folk music singers. She was the main exponent of folk music movement “Nueva Canción” (Spanish for “New Song”) born in the 1960´s as a renewal of traditional folk music and a means to fight for freedom. These musicians were censured, persecuted and as in Mercedes case, even had to resort to exile. She was an icon of the fight for human rights and became known as “the voice of the voiceless ones”.

Throughout the film both past and present are intertwined. Mercedes is the narrator of her own story as we see excerpts from footage of her public and private life. It is a portrayal of her as an artist, a woman, a mother but also of everything she represented. Every thought and emotion, every struggle and every hope, she expressed in the songs she sang, in the lyrics to which she gave life.

It is her only son, Fabián Matus, who will guide us on a journey through South America. He shows us the places where she was born, where she lived and became a singer. He says, "For me, those two women, the public and the private figure, the international artist and the mother behind closed doors, were always together. It is from this privileged position I want to tell this story". At times the film resembles a road-movie as we set foot on the lands she had most impact, in which family, fans, artists, musicians and even detractors, all share with us how they were touched by her music and persona. 

A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR:

 Rodrigo H. Vila has been internationally praised for his documentaries, in this particular case he followed Mercedes steps for more than eighteen months.  

“It is everything she left in me and everything her son Fabián wanted to tell that lead me to make this movie. I was lucky to film and direct Mercedes Sosa´s last documentary, maybe the only one that could capture the creative spirit of this great performer and her total commitment to music. I interviewed her for the last time in her life and I was utterly impressed by her deep thoughts and reflections. Her death shocked me and I felt the need to speak about something more than her music for her message goes beyond music. Hers was a social, ideological and political message, a message about life.”   

WHY ARE WE RUNNING THIS CAMPAIGN?

Cinema 7 Films is an independent producing company in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Filming is nearly done, we are therefore entering the post-production stage; we have several interviews yet to make, tons of rough material, archives, home videos, pictures...  to cut and assemble. This campaign’s´ funds will be used to finance this last step.

SINOPSIS:

“Mercedes Sosa: La Voz de Latinoamérica” es un documental homenaje a la extraordinaria cantante argentina Mercedes Sosa (1935-2009). Estructuralmente el film se basa en dos líneas narrativas: la del presente y la del pasado. Mercedes nos cuenta su propia historia, en primera persona y al mismo tiempo, Fabián Matus, su único hijo, nos sirve de guía haciéndonos descubrir el lugar dónde su madre nació, creció y se convirtió en artista.

A lo largo de la película Mercedes será la narradora de su propia historia mientras se suceden videos hogareños, extractos de shows en vivo, fragmentos de entrevistas a los medios, componiendo un film que por momentos toma la forma de un road-movie. Es el retrato de la mujer, de la artista pero también de todo aquello que ella representaba. Con el tiempo el contenido social de sus canciones, clara expresión de su sensibilidad y compromiso, fue tomando mayor relevancia. Nunca calló su voz, aún en tiempos de turbulencia política y exilio.

De la mano de Fabián Matus, partiremos por el continente sudamericano en busca del legado de Mercedes. En sus propias palabras, “Mercedes Sosa es mi madre y es a la vez la cantora de todos. Esas dos mujeres, la pública y la privada, la figura internacional y mi madre de la intimidad estuvieron siempre juntas. Desde ese lugar de privilegio personal y afectivo es que quiero contar esta historia”.

En entrevistas hechas en Argentina, Chile, Brasil y Cuba, entre otros países, a artistas, líderes políticos, colegas y amigos, surge la influencia clave de una artista que trascendió las fronteras de la música para transformarse en uno de los personajes más influyentes de Latinoamérica.

Este film aspira principalmente a revelar al público de todo el mundo, la profunda huella y valioso legado de una de las figuras más destacadas de América Latina.

 “Tuve la suerte de filmar y dirigir el último documental de Mercedes Sosa, tal vez el único que pudo capturar el espíritu creativo de esta gran artista; básicamente, el total compromiso de Mercedes para con la música. Seguimos sus huellas por dieciocho meses y desarrollamos una cercana relación con ella y su familia, especialmente con su hijo, Fabián. Soy quién la entrevistó por última vez en su vida. Me impactaron profundamente sus ideas y reflexiones. Su muerte me conmovió a tal punto que sentí la necesidad de hablar de algo más que su veta musical. El mensaje de Mercedes fue más allá de la música. El de ella era un mensaje social, político e ideológico; un mensaje sobre la vida. Es todo aquello que Mercedes Sosa dejó en mí y todo lo que Fabián quería contar que me llevaron a hacer esta película.”

Cinema 7 es una productora independiente de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Tenemos gran parte de la película ya filmada y es para nosotros un orgullo haber contado a lo largo de la producción con el auspicio del INCAA (Argentina) y ANCINE (Brasil). Estamos ahora entrando en la etapa de pos-producción y para poder terminar y distribuir este documental, necesitamos de su apoyo. Nos quedan varias entrevistas por llevar a cabo; archivos fílmicos, videos hogareños, fotos, que debemos aún seleccionar, editar y montar.

“Somos los nietos, los hermanos, los sobrinos, el hijo, de quién fue para nosotros más que una gran artista popular. Con ella compartimos la vida, las alegrías y las angustias. Mercedes pasó sus últimos momentos en paz aunque peleó aguerridamente contra la muerte. A pesar de nuestra tristeza, sabemos que cantar es lo que más feliz la hacía.
