Hello friends, friends of friends and strangers. My name is Ruwayna and I am launching this campaign to help raise funds for a life-saving bone marrow transplant for my friend Mona Abulhassan.
As many of you already know almost 3 years ago in her mid-20s Mona was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia type T. Since then, she has been defeating, struggling and overcome by this disease and is now urgently in need of a bone-marrow transplant. She has received most of her treatment in Cairo, Egypt but is now receiving treatment in London, England because the necessary drugs are not available in Cairo. Soon, we hope, she will be receiving a transplant. She has no matches in her family, and so the type of procedure she has to undergo can only be performed abroad (Egypt does not do the transplant for unrelated donors). There is no insurance to cover these costs so her family has been funding this through personal savings and grants.
Medical
costs are constantly building up and after almost 3 years of treatment, you can
imagine what kinds of hurdles those costs have become. I think that as a global
community: Egypt, the Gulf, North America, Europe, Asia, perhaps even some of you
down-under; we can help Mona and her family keep up with the finances necessary
for her treatment, and make this journey a little less over-whelming.
What We Need
Please send what you can, all you need is a credit card and a few minutes. Whether it's 20$, or 20,000$, I assure you it all adds up. You can also send money by bank transfer directly to the hospital in England. Email me at ruwayna@gmail.com for the account info.
These are the costs that need to be covered:
1- 10,000GBP ($15,800) This is the amount necessary in the next few days / weeks to cover a recent hospitalisation expense for an infection that has fortunately been cured.
2- 50,000GBP ($79,000) This amount is needed to cover the latest chemotherapy costs.
The transplant costs more than this, over 100,000 British pounds, but some of the costs have already been collected and I have decided to start with these immediate goals first.
These kinds of figures seemed huge to me when I first heard them, but I have discovered over the last few months through other fund-raising initiatives that anything is possible. So this website is only one of multiple avenues for fundraising, there are others. For now, let's reach the first goal of 15,800$ ... If we can meet that goal, we'll step up to the next one, then the next.

A Little Bit About Mona
Mona was raised in Doha, Qatar then moved back to her hometown, Cairo in her teenage years. Mona studied philosophy in university, but like many graduates of this department, eventually found herself working in another field, and found a passion in the field of media and visual arts. She started her career working for a Cairo-based production agency, then became a freelance producer, mainly for news and documentaries. As her experience grew she became concerned with the need and ability of audiences to analyze media production and narration. As a volunteer, and a philosopher still, she was regularly involved in organizing and facilitating projects that help youth develop a critical literacy of media and visual representation.
By helping Mona regain her full health you are supporting a wonderful sister and friend, and also helping her continue this work. Thank you for your contributions and for helping us spread the word.
Team Matching Mona.
