The Gustave Baumann House:

A Marriage of Art & Architecture

The Historic Santa Fe Foundation is an architecture conservation organization that was established in 1961 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Currently, we own nine historic properties. Our most recent acquisition was the Gustave Baumann House.

The interior walls of the building represent Baumann's largest work of art. Our greatest achievement was to complete their work - update the house to current codes and uses - with the new work being indiscernible.

Besides being one of Santa Fe best known artist, Baumann carved marionettes that were performed by his wife Jane and daughter Ann. During the Baumann years, the living room was used as a theater. This summer, in association with the New Mexico Museum of Art, Baumanns marionettes will come home for a visit.

The Gustave Baumann House is a model for successful building conservation and rehabilitation. We hope you will help us to complete the work we started.

From the beginning of this project, we have given attention to the neediest items first. We could be more thrifty in our approach. Our focused is to perform conservation measures that we would not entrust to anyone else. For instance, one of our greatest challenges was to route the new wiring without harming the decorative finishes. We accomplished it without disturbing one square inch of decorative paint. We hired professional conservators to stabilize and clean the original finishes. Interior cracks were repaired using an uncommon hydraulic lime injection method. The few areas that had been painted over through the years were restored to their original color.

Through all the work that we have performed, we still have so much that we could do.

The original plantings should be restored; fireplaces need rehabilitation work; the basement and crawl space must be vented and final photo documentation must be performed. In examining the Baumann family archives, no photos exist of the performance stage in place in the living room. Our final project, to install the stage and perform the Baumann marionettes, will be video and photo documented.

This is, and has been, such a stellar project. We need your help in the final stretch. By donating now, you will receive discounted event prices and the satisfaction of knowing that you helped preserve a great Santa Fe treasure.
