MY CHILD is an independent feature documentary-in-production where parents of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) individuals in Turkey intimately share their experiences with the viewer, as they redefine what it means to be parents, family, and activists in a conservative, homophobic, and transphobic society.

In Turkey, every day, LGBT individuals are subjected to various forms of discrimination and violence, some unfortunately resulting in loss of life. Such violence cannot solely be explained by conservatism and various phobias. The discriminatory laws, police violence, banning of LGBT associations, and censoring of web sites with LGBT content are only a few examples of the systematic government policies and ongoing human rights violations.

 

 

Redefining what a family is… LISTAG

In this atmosphere, to fight against this mentality and its practices, a few parents of LGBT individuals got together in 2008 and established LISTAG (Families of LGBT in Istanbul) as a solidarity and support group for friends, families, and especially parents of LGBT individuals.

 

Acting in solidarity with LGBT organizations, LISTAG has intervened in the current political sphere, by releasing public statements and engaging with politicians. It has actively been working against homophobia, transphobia, discrimination, and hate crimes, being a source of inspiration and strength for LGBT individuals, by reminding them that it is not impossible to come out to their families.

 

About the Film

In the documentary, MY CHILD, these courageous and inspiring group of mothers and fathers tell their personal stories of the birth of their child, of how they found out about their child’s sexual orientation, of how they learn to accept and embrace… When they talk about how they experienced the coming out of their children, they refer to it as the ‘death of a child and birth of a new one’. They say this extremely traumatic experience has also led to their own rebirth, as they have been questioning what it means to be an individual, to be true to oneself, and to be a parent.

 

Apart from their personal stories as parents, the film also tells their stories as the LISTAG parents, as activists, of how and why they came together, how they work together and support other families, how they try to reach more parents, about their activism for visibility, acceptance, and equal rights.

Who are we?

MY CHILD is a trully collaborative project. The director and producer Can Candan is an independent filmmaker of 22 years and an academician. Producer team from Surela Film, Ayse Cetinbas and Gokce Ince are documentary filmmakers, producing mainly politically and socially engaging documentaries. H. Metehan Ozkan is a LISTAG volunteer and a PhD student of social anthropology, acting both as our advisor and co-producer. Mehmet Tarhan, one of the important figures of the conscientious objectors’ movement in Turkey, also a LISTAG volunteer, is acting as our other project advisor. Boysan Yakar, also a LISTAG volunteer who made and participated many short films and documentaries about LGBT issues, is the assistant director. Of course, our team includes many more devoted people, whom we are very happy and lucky to be working with. Of course, the most important collaborators are the parents themselves.

 

 

We believe this project is very urgent

In Turkey, conservatism has increased dramatically in recent years and this increase seems to be jeopardizing more and more lives. Especially LGBT individuals are mostly perceived as marginal members of the society because of the prevailing prejudices. But when parents stand by their children, they set such a positive example for other LGBT relatives, friends, and the society at large, and hence, politically speaking, they have been very influential.

 

We believe that one of the most effective methods in the struggle against homophobia and transphobia in this society is making it possible for the voices of LISTAG parents to be heard by as many people as possible. We believe that, in this way, this documentary will make a contribution to the struggle for democratic rights for and to end discrimination and violence against LGBT individuals.

 

Until now LISTAG parents have been using pseudonyms. The press releases, interviews were all given under different names and without photographs. Now they believe that it is time for them to come out publicly, even more forcefully, using their own identities.

 

Because of all these reasons, realizing this film and bringing it to the screen is very urgent. That is why we have given ourselves such a short time to complete this documentary. We have started this project in June 2011 and aim to finish it by May 2012.

 

Money matters

The total budget for this film of 99,000 Euros (131,000 Dollars) consists of pre-production, production and post-productions costs. We have already spent 7,500 Euros (10,000 Dollars) for some of the pre-production expenses out of our own pockets... But, to be able to continue with the production we need your support. We have been applying for some film funds and NGO funds, but since the process of applying and getting an answer (and hopefully getting the grant…) takes time, we would probably have some funds coming our way only in time for post-production. So, right now we are trying to get some support for the production expenses which add up to 30,000 Euros (40,000 Dollars).

 

In case we succeed to collect more funds than we need for our budget, the extra funds will be donated to LISTAG, the parents’ organization.

 

In addition to helping us to realize our dream, with your donation, you will be contributing to the struggle for LGBT rights in Turkey. We hope to show our appreciation and gratitude by providing a series of incentives.

Dünyanın birçok ülkesinde olduğu gibi Türkiye'de de cinsellik, özellikle de eşcinsellik, biseksüellik, travesti ve transseksüellik ataerkillik ve cinsiyetçilikle beslenen tabu konulardır. Her gün LGBTT bireyler ayrımcılığın ve şiddetin birçok çeşidine maruz kalmakta ve hatta ölümle sonuçlanan olaylar yaşamaktadırlar.

 

Aile kavramını yeniden tanımlamak… LİSTAG

Böyle bir ortamda, bu zihniyete karşı savaşmak için birkaç ebeveyn bir araya gelerek 2008 yılında LGBTT bireylerin arkadaşları, aileleri ve özellikle anne ve babaları için dayanışma ve destek grubu olan LİSTAG’ı (LGBTT Aileleri İstanbul Grubu) kurdular.

 

LİSTAG’lılar, geçen kısa süre içerisinde gerçekleştirdikleri etkinliklerle homofobi, transfobi, ayrımcılık ve nefret suçları ile mücadele etmiş, ve LGBTT bireylerin ailelerine açılmaları konusunda teşvik edici bir rol oynamıştır.

 

Film Hakkında

BENİM ÇOCUĞUM belgeselinde LİSTAG’lı anne ve babalar çocuklarının doğumundan başlayıp cinsel yönelim ve cinsiyet kimliklerini öğrenme süreçlerini, kabullenişlerini ve beraber kurdukları örgütlü mücadeleyi tüm içtenlikleriyle paylaşıyorlar. Bu oldukça zor deneyimi  ‘çocuklarının ölümü’ ve ‘yeni bir çocuklarının doğumu’ olarak tanımlarken aynı zamanda ‘kendilerinin de yeniden doğuşları’ olarak ifade ediyorlar. Ebeveynler, paylaştıkları kişisel deneyimleriyle birey olmayı, kendine karşı dürüst olmayı ve ebeveyn olmayı yeniden tanımlıyorlar.

Biz kimiz?

BENİM ÇOCUĞUM birçok alandan bir araya gelmiş bir ekipten meydana gelmektedir. 22 yıldır bağımsız filmler çeken yönetmenimiz ve yapımcımız Can Candan, aynı zamanda Boğaziçi Üniversitesi’nde akademisyendir. Surela Film’den belgesel film yapımcıları Ayşe Çetinbaş ve Gökçe İnce sosyal ve politik içeriği olan birçok belgesel çekmişlerdir. Ortak yapımcımız ve proje danışmanımız Listag gönüllüsü H. Metehan Özkan sosyal antropoloji alanında doktora çalışmasına devam etmektedir. Türkiye’deki savaş karşıtı mücadelede önemli bir figür olan Listag gönüllüsü ve vicdani retçi Memet Tarhan da filmin diğer danışmanıdır. Yönetmen yardımcımız Boysan Yakar ise LGBTT’ler üzerine kısa film ve belgeseller çekmiş bir Listag gönüllüsüdür. Filmimiz için bize gönülden bağlanmış başka birçok kişiyle de bu ortak çalışmayı yürütürken, en önemli desteği bizlerle hikayelerini paylaşan aile bireylerinden almaktayız.

 

Bu projenin neden hemen gerçekleşmesini önemsiyoruz?

Türkiye’de özellikle son yıllarda artan muhafazakarlık önemli derecede kendini hissettirmekte ve birçok hayatı da yaptırımlarıyla etkisi altına almaya devam etmektedir.

Buna karşın anneler ve babalar LGBTT çocuklarına sahip çıktıklarını söylediklerinde ve bu yaklaşımları ile başka LGBTT yakınlarını, arkadaşlarını ve tüm toplumu ikna etmeye çalıştıklarında oldukça etkileyici sonuçlar almışlardır.

 

Şu ana kadar LİSTAG’lı aileler gerek verdikleri röportajlarda, gerek katıldıkları etkinliklerde veya haber oldukları gazete ve dergilerde hep takma isimler kullandılar ve yüzlerini göstermeyerek yer aldılar. Artık topluma açılmayı, yüzlerini göstermeyi tercih eden aile bireylerimiz bunu BENİM ÇOCUĞUM belgeseliyle gerçekleştirmeye karar verdiler ve tüm dünyaya sözlerini duyurmak için kamera karşısına geçtiler.

 

Tüm bu sebeplerden dolayı bu filmi bir an evvel hayata geçirmek çok büyük bir önem taşımaktadır. Bu projeye Haziran 2011’de başladık ve Mayıs 2012’e kadar da tamamlamayı hedefledik.

 

Parasal Mevzular…

Filmin toplam bütçesi olan 99,000 EUR (131,000 USD) yapım öncesi, yapım ve yapım sonrası maliyetleri içermektedir. Şu ana kadar yapım öncesi sürecinde cebimizden 7,500 EUR (10,000 USD) harcamış bulunmaktayız... Ancak yapımı tamamlayabilmemiz için desteğinize ihtiyacımız var. Bazı film fonları ve STK fonlarına başvuru yaptık, ancak başvuru işlemleri ve yanıt alınması (ki umarız olumlu bir yanıt alacağız) epey zaman aldığından muhtemelen alacağımız destek fonları ancak yapım sonrası aşamasına yetişecek. O nedenle şu anda yapım süreci için yaklaşık 30,000 EUR (40,000 USD) destek arıyoruz.

 

Bağışlarınızla hayallerimizi gerçekleştirebilmemiz dışında Türkiye’de LGBTT hakları mücadelesine önemli bir katkı sağlamış olacaksınız. Hedeflediğimizden daha çok fon aldığımız takdirde fazlası LİSTAG’a bağışlanacaktır.
