about the incredible career of Big Band leader Moxie Whitney
.

Help us make MOXIE!

Hello, my name is Paul Whitney. I am a writer, actor and producer... and not coincidentally, a son of Moxie Whitney.

A few years ago the Whitney family donated Moxie's music, photos and letters to Library and Archives Canada. I decided to digitize his collection. What a decision! There were thousands of photos. Photos from his WWII Royal Canadian Air Force big band service. Photos from the great hotels he played, like the Royal York, Banff Springs, Chateau Lake Louise – virtually every great hotel in Canada, but he also played in Hawaii, Bahamas, the Cayman Islands and in the US. We found photos with famous stars of the day, Jack Benny, Ella Fitzgerald, Alan Ladd, Duke Ellington, Sonny & Cher.

And the STORIES! How he hauled a live shipping mine onto a crowded Waikiki Beach. Talked down a suicidal trumpet player from the roof of the Banff Springs during a band break. What it's like to play a Mountie, a railway worker and a bank robber – with Alan Ladd and all in the same movie – Saskatchewan. He also performed in Canadian Pacific with Randolph Scott!

Moxie’s is an almost unbelievable tale of how, during the Depression, he rose up from an impoverished single parent family as a boy with a permanent disability – to travel the world, gain millions of fans, find the woman of his dreams and land the longest running gig at the most prestigious ballroom this country ever had, the Imperial Room at the Royal York Hotel, in Toronto.

Moxie chose to stay in Canada – when Canada wasn't cool. He even turned down job offers from Hollywood's Louis B. Meyer and some very large men in dark suits from Las Vegas. Now that took MOXIE!

This is a fabulously funny, entertaining and endearing story about courage and perseverance. Its about what it takes to follow your dreams when it seems like the cards are stacked against you. Something called MOXIE! And this film has plenty of it!

Why Support MOXIE!?

Canadians often under rate their history. We shouldn't – because it is fabulous! I have a little test for you – ask anyone older than 50, if they've ever heard of Moxie Whitney and the Imperial Room at the Royal York Hotel. Nine out of 10 will say something like, “Moxie Whitney! We used to dance to him” or “My parents...” or “I saw Tony Bennett... Anne Murray there!”

This film won't just show you why our history is so essential to us... it will take you there and let you experience one of the defining periods of the Canadian entertainment scene. Big Band, Big Entertainers – told through the eyes of someone who was there – Canadian performer and writer, Paul Whitney.

How Can You Help?

This part is easy! We need $41,000 to finish this film. Once we reach that goal, your ongoing support and applause will help get this film broadcast and out to the widest audience possible. So please donate... but also, support us with connections to friends and relatives through social media or good old word of mouth. Donate and tweet about it. Donate and email a link to your friends. Talk about it. Follow @MoxieWhitney on Twitter, friend his Facebook page, sign up for RSS feed from the MoxieWhitney.com website.

What You Get for Your Support

We have some pretty cool, vintage big band memorabilia. Original vinyl records, original dance posters, original radio broadcasts and vintage Christmas Cards. We'll also give DVDs of the film once it's finished.

What Will We Do With Your Money?

We have worked tirelessly (okay, sometimes we were tired), for the past 24 months and have written a great story. We've interviewed people who knew, worked and admired Moxie. Like jazz legend Tommy Banks and Norm Hathaway, now 84, who was in Moxie's first Royal York Orchestra and still has his own big band. We've digitized thousands of images, press clippings, films and audio recordings.  In brief, we have massed a mountain of entertainment! Now, we need to put it all together and that where your donations come in.

We still need to do a bit more shooting, a great sound edit, a great picture edit, colour correction, and a bunch of other technical things that people, who seem to know, insist are important. It's called Post Production. It's also about $41,000. If you help us reach that goal, we can finish the film. If we exceed that, we will be able to do even more.

You Mean There's More?

We're also creating a live, very funny, motivational stage show for all audiences to encourage people to find their 'inner Moxie' and follow their dreams. The show will be supplemented with stunning never before released images and audio recordings and This will be very popular with schools and organizations.

We're also working on a Big Band website repository for anything Big Band – especially Canadian Big Band. Photos, memories, posters, the music then and now, news, events and best of all... a digital re-creation of what that period of history meant to that generation. We have so much amazing material; we need a place to display it.

What if We Don't Get $41,000?

We won't stop, that's for sure. This film will be made. However, your support will help us make it sooner... and better. A little bit, shinier, a little bit better sounding, a few more effects, more entertainment... more Moxie! That's where we're going. Will you help us get there?

Oh, if we don't raise the full amount but you made a donation? We still get your donation AND you still get your perk!

What Else Can You Do?

If you don't feel that you can support us financially, we would still appreciate your help spreading the word. Please tell your parents, grandparents, relatives or friends about the MOXIE! project. Share this link and the Moxie Whitney website link. Encourage them to support us or send a memory. If the only thing you can give is a great memory, then it's our gift to you!

Wishing you a the best in 2012 and

Lots of MOXIE!
