Our Story

Urban Midwifery, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit agency that was founded in 2006 with the goals of "Making" Healthy Mamas who in-turn will 'Make" Healthy Babies, and also addressing disparities in maternal and infant mortality that exist in the African American/Black community.  Urban Midwifery provides underserved, low-income, and/or women who live in rural communities with traditional midwifery services.  Services are provided in the home of the client if trasnportation, resources, and/or childcare are obstacles. We have had the honor of having midwives volunteer with Urban Midwifery to provide services to those in need.  Our desire is to provide 100% access to midwifery care for women with low-risk pregnancies.  In 2011 we expanded to South Carolina, a State that ranks 46th in Infant Mortality, and where midwives are under represented.  We hope to open the first alternative birth center in the Beaufort, South Carolina.

The Impact

Through the birthing center, Urban Midwifery will offer women who wish to deliver naturally a 'safe' place to do so.  The threat of unjustified interventions which often lead to costly epidurals and cesarean sections will be removed, and by offering women the option to deliver in the birthing center Urban Midwifery will reduce costs for the tax-payer.

In the US today, poor women and African American/Black women lose their lives disproportionately from prenatal and childbirth complications.  This is sometimes because of complications to cesarean sections that were done as the result of many unnecessary interventions during the labor.  It is time to bring birth back to the women and her family - making it woman-centered verses doctor-centered.

What We Need & What You Get

We are striving to raise $20,000 on this forum.  Those funds will help us to secure the site, make minor improvements, and pay a portion of our malpractice insurance.  The site that we have found is $3000 monthly and will allow us to have two wonderful birth suites and a large educational room, (in addition to the office space).  To date, we have submitted a proposal for a grant, and we are assembling a fundraising committee  that will assist us with planning some fundraising events.

Other Ways You Can Help

We are also seeking donations of furniture, office equipment, and medical equipment.
