Our Story
We represent a collective of creative people focusing our intention on land, food and wellness. We have been presenting films, workshops and community gatherings throughout the United States to deepen awareness around conscious nutrition, local food systems and land stewardship.
Our team is comprised of MaituFoods, The Inside Out Yoga, m.a.m.a. Earth, Gebsite and filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu. We have been teaching yoga, food preparation, visual art and urban farming for over ten years collectively. We have also held fundraising campaigns for international non-profits and produced award-winning films that represent Africa in the light of its greatness and complexity. All of these skills will be utilized in Africa to offer a service to the communities we learn from. While in Africa we will plant food and share what we know about healthy living and productive land stewardship.
We will be sending Eugene Cooke (urban agriculture specialist) and JoVonna Johnson-Cooke (conscious nutritionist) to Kenya in December to further develop our concept for sustainable community development worldwide. This two-month trip will focus on researching local food growing practices, indigenous recipes and food preparation in rural and urban east Africa. Both Eugene and JoVonna have traveled to Kenya once before and this extended trip will enhance their ability to serve communities in Africa as well as in the United States.
The Impact
While in Africa we will assist communities by installing gardens and organizing vegetarian food preparation demonstrations. These activities will have a direct impact on the health and independence of the people. We will incorporate our research into multimedia and video products to share the information and develop the platform to foster relationships that will move the project forward. The extended impact will ripple through your area as well. The multimedia products that are developed from this research will be available online to schools, churches and community groups as educational tools for developing local prototypes for healthy food systems.
At this time healthy lifestyles and local food systems are being highlighted worldwide. We are also witnessing the misuse of land on the African continent as well as in the urban areas of the United States. We will apply what is learned from this research trip to the vacant lots and foreclosed properties in the U.S. It is clear that if these fertile areas are protected and cultivated with integrity we can feed many people and develop a paradise for citizens and travelers looking for an oasis of wellness.
What We Need & What You Get
The funds we raise will directly support the cost of traveling and researching in East Africa. Travel and accommodations have been partially covered by our own investment. What remains is $4,000 for our team to travel through Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia for 2-3months documenting our research in film and interviews. Funds will also be used for supplies and materials necessary for garden projects and conducting vegetarian food preparation workshops in East Africa. The finished documentation will be edited and presented in Africa as well as at gatherings in the United States in 2011. These gatherings will be the forum for supporters, activists and interested people to learn more about our goals and help us develop an inclusive approach to partnership. This funding will allow us to research and educate in East Africa and bring our trip back to the U.S. where we can develop new ways to implement what we have learned.
