Our Story
The Roxian will be a catalyst for renovation of
McKees Rocks. A community which once was thriving with over 18,000 people in the 1970's. and then went on a downward spiral once the mills closed and our residency dropped to under 6000 in 2010.
Here we are in 2012 with the excitement and momentum growing. We have idealist and hard working people who are turning things around and we need your help.
There are 100,000 people who live within three miles of this
theater, that will all benefit greatly. McKees Rocks
Community Development Corp., the nonprofit organization now owns the building
and is working to revitalize McKees Rocks.
It's about utilizing our assets: our historic
buildings, waterfronts, and green spaces. And it's about believing in a
new day for our community!
The Impact
The revamped 1928 movie house will serve as a mid-size venue for various types of performing arts. Located on Chartiers Avenue, the 1,500-seat theater's size is unique in the Pittsburgh area.
There are many shows that just bypass Pittsburgh because there are no venues this size.
The opening of the Roxian
Theater represents a tremendous opportunity for Pittsburgh and the Southwestern
Pennsylvania region. The Pittsburgh
region has many small venues that seat 500 people or fewer—and the region also
has larger venues of 3,000 seats or more.
Yet nothing in the mid-size range
is available to attract moderately popular, national acts. The Roxian will fill that void.
What We Need & What You Get
$750,000 has already been raised to enabled McKees Rocks CDC
to acquire the property, fund architectural design and other soft costs, and
initiate renovations. The second phase
of fundraising is to complete the
project.
Once completed this magnifcant venue will serve all people in the Southwestern part of Pennsylvania and those who come to visit. We will all benefit from the completion that will serve to be a home for all the arts that bypass our area because there is currently no setting that accomondates their needs.
