Our story sees Lucia return to Croatia 15 years after fleeing to the West. She finds her elderly, eccentric mother living alone, in a rural dilapidated house, still washing her laundry by hand and living the way rural Croatians have for a hundred years.
Lucia brings her young son with her, to meet his Grandmother for the first time. As he explores the house, he finds the kite that Lucia and her brother used to play with. The trip begins to bring back all the memories of her past, the joyful and the sorrowful.
The countryside where her mother lives is still peppered with landmines, dropped during the Balkans War in the 1990s. After her son has a close encounter with a landmine, Lucia is forced to relive the traumatic past she had escaped. She is reminded of the brother she lost in the war, and of the fragility of life in this post-war environment. Having arrived with a disdainful attitude towards this rural lifestyle, she learns to view her old-fashioned mother with a renewed respect.
