01/11/2012 - UPDATE: FUNDING GOAL MET!
Today is director Ashley Lynch's birthday and is also the day we met our funding goal! A better birthday gift could not be had. Team Firefly thanks each and every one of you dearly for helping to make awesome independent films possible.
But we're not stopping. There's still 23 days left in our campaign and still a limited number of DVDs and comics to be had for contributors. We've made enough money to get through production, but submitting the finished film to festivals will easily cost as much as the film. (seriously, it's $100 on average to submit for consideration) If you're interested in seeing Last Flight of the Firefly play at a film festival in your city or town, then please consider contributing because we'll definitely give those festivals priority consideration.
01/01/2012 - UPDATE: BARRON S SONG!
Every superhero needs a theme song and Firefly just got hers. The insanely talented and incredible songstress Barron S is providing us with her song "More Than You're In For." Check out Barron's site for more of her music and while you're at it, pick up her debut album Startin' From Scratch which was easily the best new album I heard in 2011 (even if it was released before 2011)

The Movie
Last Flight of the Firefly is the story of Alison Brody (Anita Reimer) who at one time was the enigmatic superhero Firefly, but after a devistating battle with the now dead Warfare, was left physically and mentally crippled, and without her powers. Now "retired," Alison struggles to overcome the new limitations that have be set on her.
Now, on the eve of a violent thunderstorm, Alison finds herself under attack by the ghosts of a past she's left behind. As she struggles to keep what's left of her sanity, she has to figure out what's real and what isn't before it's too late.
Last Flight of the Firefly is a unique cross genre film in that it's a character driven dark thriller, the kind that would make Uncle Hitchcock proud, but it lives in a world of costumed superheroes. It's Spider-man meets Repulsion. This allows us to play with conventions of the psychological thriller/horror genre in new an colorful ways and have a kick ass action scene that will blow you away. Bottom line, this is something you've never seen before and it is going to be awesome.
The Comic
Last Flight of the FIrefly: Half-Light is the special edition comic that will accompany the short film. Written by Ashely Lynch and illustrated by Robert Bennett, Half-Light will follow Alison's life as Firefly before she was injured and show the epic battle she had with Warfare that changed who she is.
We're taking all the actors back into the studio for this one and having them record the dialogue. The full motion comic will appear on the DVD and be distributed as an iPad app. A small print run of the comic will also be created and these will be limited edition signed and numbered copies. Check the perks on the right to see how you can get one.
Our Story
A Message from Writer / Director Ashley Lynch
Believe it or not, this is actually a deeply personal story for me. You see, seven years ago I was hit by a drunk driver which left me permanently injured. I still have to rely on a cane to get around to this day. It occured to me that in all the comics I've read and all the superhero movies I've seen, characters get mercilessly pummelled and there's really no physical consequence beyond the two extremes of life and death. You never see the story of a superhero who suffers permanent injury. A story about someone crippled overcoming adversity is just sappy and has Lifetime Network written all over it. But a story about a superhero, someone who once flew through the night sky and created light from pure will, seeing them deal with being crippled and overcoming adversity from an extremely vulnerable place... that's a story I want to see, and one I want to tell.
The second reason I want to make this is that I have a personal mandate... a mission statement if you will. It reads that I am dedicated to making hardcore action thrillers that star non-sexualized, kick-ass female action heroes. It means fully realized characters giving and receiving equal opportunity ass-kicking.

What We Need & What You Get
Even though there's a lot of things we're getting for free and everyone is donating their time and skills, there's still lots of things that cost money on a short film like this. There still equipment that needs to be rented, custom props that need to be built, breakaway glass that needs to be installed. Also, my golden rule is that your crew cannot go hungry. That goes double when your crew isn't getting paid.
The big one on this film though is the costumes. When you're making a film about original superheroes, their costumes can not look ridiculous. You can't just throw them into a yoga suit and dress it up with a belt. Half the budget alone is being eaten up by the costumes Firefly's costume in particular is going to be handmade out of latex by a professional rubber seamstress, and I can assure you, the final product on film will blow you away.
The final fight in this film is going to be something else, let me tell you. Our lead actress is a trained performer in many different combat styles and we've crafted one hell of an exciting fight for you. Fights are not easy to film quickly though, especially when you're involving stuntwork which requires proper attention to safety protocol and even longer setup time to ensure that no one gets hurt. We want it to look deadly, not be deadly. Right now we're budgeted for three days. We really need four. This means more cost for equipment, food and location costs.
Regardless of how much money we raise here, Last Flight of the Firefly will be made. I'm paying for it entirely out of my own pocket. All the money here goes towards giving us that extra day we need to deliver the type of action that you want to see in a film like this.
