Our Story

The Little Free Libraries are quickly gaining attention around the world, and it is time to get some of these great libraries into non-profit organizations in Waukesha County.  Little Free Libraries are house-shaped "take a book, leave a book" structures that we'd like to install in various locations around the county.  We'd like to emphasize getting these Little Free Libraries into locations dedicated to the public good, such as food pantries, shelters, community groups, and more.  Each Little Free Library holds twenty to thirty books, and anyone is welcome to take a book to read, or leave a book for others to enjoy.

The Impact

The importance of literacy cannot be overstated, and getting people excited about reading is a wonderful way to promote literacy.  We envision these libraries to have selections of books for kids and adults which will turn over several times in a month.   While many of the existing Little Free Libraries are installed on private property, such as people's yards, these Libraries are particularly important because they will be installed in locations that have a particular need to give access to books to its patrons.

What We Need & What You Get

Each Little Free Library is handcrafted by repurposing old barn boards and is designed to withstand all kinds of weather.  The cost of each Library is $400.00 so the initial goal is to raise enough funds for three libraries, although there are certainly more locations in Waukesha that would be great candidates to house these Libraries. We already have three locations that will be wonderful hosts to their Libraries.

Other Ways You Can Help

If you can't donate right now, consider looking through your old books to see if you have any gently books you could donate as an initial start-up inventory for the Libraries.  Of particular interest are children's books.  And of course, the best way to help is to get the word out - share this on your Facebook page, Tweet, and tell your friends.
