For years, Katrina — a young, professional, black diva — had dismissed as nonsense any notion that using the “N-word” (or other expressions of racial negativity) could actually have harmful consequences. Well, . . . that was until a routine cell phone chat becomes a jarring wakeup call — prompting a disturbing moment of clarity that leads her to ultimately reconsider.

WHAT MAKES THIS PROJECT DIFFERENT
|
|
This short, character-driven drama cleverly weaves together entertainment and community outreach.
ENTERTAINMENT:
Not only does it provide an interesting narrative concept (i.e., an uninterrupted cell phone conversation from beginning to end), but also features an engaging fire-cracker of a female lead. This young, professional, black woman is a dynamic blend of "urban" and "corporate" cultures -- not to mention a self-absorbed "Sista-with-Attitude."
In addition, the story provides 2 delicious layers. It manages to present a funny, upbeat slice of a business traveler's day-gone-awry on the surface, while delivering a powerful and poignant message underneath.
OUTREACH:
Because this story brings an important and positive message, we crafted this film from the beginning to be a media tool -- supporting the work of grassroots community organizations, educational institutions, early childhood development professionals and individuals that are working with youth and addressing issues relating to racial identity, diversity, and community-building.
Inspired by the Langston Hughes poem "My People," "Katrina's 7th" tackles the issue of racial alienation within the African-American community. One could argue that many black youth suffer the harmful effects of the use of the "N-word" and other demeaning/racist language… and don't even know it. This film examines how negative racial messages are gradually internalized and passed from generation to generation. It illuminates the profound impact of these messages on a child's self-image and how they can lead to self-mockery and racial alienation.
While most discourse and programs on race focus on the overt effects of INTER-racial conflict, few dare to tread into the INTRA-racial waters for fear of "airing dirty laundry." This is where "Katrina's 7th" comes in -- to shed light on what might be one of the more subtle, insidious threats to the unity and well-being of the African-American community.
Because it presents a dramatic situation that naturally leads into discussion, it's my hope that "Katrina's 7th" can be a vehicle for getting people thinking, talking, and reflecting on how we African-Americans can brave those INTRA-racial waters and move beyond the negativity.

Our Final Act: PRODUCTION SUSPENDED!!
Dear Friends, we have been truly overwhelmed by the positive response our project (“Katrina’s 7th”) has received. Unfortunately, despite the awards/honors at screenwriting fests, the encouragement & referrals of friends and other filmmakers, and the various forms of in-kind corporate support, the fundraising results have been insufficient to continue with production. Thus, we regret to announce that we will have to suspend the “Katrina’s 7th” project.
We fully acknowledge that our project has largely suffered from unfortunate timing (i.e., worst recession since Great depression) – which led one corporate sponsor (“Vibe” magazine) into bankruptcy and prompted another to withdraw its funding commitment.
To-date, we have raised only $600 toward our goal. Nevertheless, we’ve put your $600 to good use. It has enabled us to (1) conduct auditions, (2) secure dramatic rights to use Langston Hughes’ poetry, and (3) cover legal fees associated with releases, contracts and other agreements.
Because the film’s narrative is based on a continuous cell phone conversation, our belief has been that perfecting the vocal performance beforehand liberates us to focus on the physical performance during shooting. This will help to cut costs (fewer takes) and minimize the amount of operational disruption at certain key locations (e.g., airports, car rental agency, hotel, etc.). So,… in the event that there’s a late-breaking REVERSAL OF FORTUNE, we have decided to continue with the next scheduled production milestone –- Voice-Over & Audio Pre-Recording Session. This is set for December 12th and is possible only with the generous in-kind donation of sound & audio-post services by a local studio.
Stay tuned… I’m sure we’ll be right back! |

AUDITIONS COMPLETE! Response to our casting call was overwhelming. We had a packed house — with lots of strong performances. I can already tell that narrowing it down to our 3 lead actresses will be tough. |
