cbd.int/business/case-studies/ Title contains: Kamaka
The project is lead by the Bozo fishing community of Kamaka in the Sahel region of Northern Mali. (Kindly be introduced to some of Kamaka's inhabitants by enjoying the gallery section on this page)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bozo_peopleKamaka is collaborating with two professors, two sustainable development and management students, and a permaculture expert. (Kindly refer to the team at the bottom of this page)
Inspired by the "Greening the Desert" project in Jordan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzTHjlueqFI, the team has come together in attempting to permanently eradicate poverty conditions in Kamaka, throught the sustainable regeneration and preservation of biodiversity in the devastating context of desertification
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDWS6AzEkE0The project is based on a model of "natural farming" / permaculture, and social business:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8X0H7V6dDi8http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0C3XQ3BTd4oThe objective is to regenerate the degraded environment through the development of a thriving edible forest garden in Kamaka, that will guarantee the community's food security while at the same time creating profit generating activities for a healthy local economy.
Profits will be directly reinvested in the project itself, so as to ensure its financial autonomy and the overall sustainable development of the community, without having to depend on the very often ineffective and limited international aid.
The project is now in its implementation phase. For this it requires
23,000$Upon the demand of the community, a much needed and
urgent additional 7,000$ are required for the purchase of a moto-ambulance for Kamaka:
http://www.eranger.com/As a result of a lack of transport, the women of Kamaka, still today, deliver their young ones unassisted.
1 in 16 pregnant African women runs the risk of dying because of lack of access to a medical facility, against 1 in 4,000 on average in developed nations. (UNICEF Report).
Therefore, it is a
total of 30,000$ that we aim to raise through our "Road to Kamaka" campaign.
Our objective is to
begin implementing the project with the delivery of the ambulance, by April 2012.The ImpactOur vision is to successfully implement the project so that a proven model of sustainable development can be eventually replicated on the long-term with all fifty communities in the region of Kamaka.
If we don't succeed, this will imply that desertification will continue to have the better of the environment and thousands of local communities in the region, who's cultures and villages are disappearing as a result of desertification and extreme poverty; while very high levels of maternal and child moralities will continue to be a staggering reality in our day and age!
1 in 5 Sahelian child dies before the age of 5 as a direct cause of desertification and poverty.(UNICEF/WCARO)
