Jonathan Howard Katz composerpianist is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization. Contributions for the purposes of Jonathan Howard Katz composerpianist must be made payable to Fractured Atlas and are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
Composing music can be a solitary activity.  Lots of time locked away at the computer, at the piano, at a table with pencil and staff paper.  This is why I'm happy when a project can involve other creative people, and this free concert at The DiMenna Center for Classical Music on April 25 at 7:30 pm is full of exciting collaborations not only between myself and other musicians, but with artists across a wide spectrum.

I've found that I'm most inspired when I can build from, interpret, or incorporate the talents of others, and most of the music on this program exemplifies this.  There are the Three Sketches on Paintings by Regina Guerrero, a short quintet I wrote early in 2010, for which we'll project images of the paintings in the hall during the performance.  Also the forthcoming Meacham Songs, for soprano and piano, with texts by Molly Meacham—I was stunned to discover among my friends a poet whose work I just had to set to music, but that's what happened!

The biggest collaborative efforts in this concert, and among my largest projects to date, are two ensemble pieces that will be choreographed, one for two dancers and the other for seven.  These are my first stage works, and I'm tremendously happy to have Leigh Schanfein involved in their creation.  As a performer and a choreographer, Leigh is a powerfully expressive artist, and I think that the dimension her contribution will add to this program will be truly memorable.  The other dancers in the cast will be Tucker Davis, Mike Hodge, Paul Monaghan, Lydia Phillips, Keelin Ryan, and Lauren Santos.

And let's not forget the musicians!  I have an impressive roster of talent, coming from some of New York's top ensembles.  The full list includes pianists Aaron Likness and William McNally, soprano Mary Mackenzie, flutist Sarah Carrier, oboist Kristin Leitterman, clarinetist Alicia Lee, percussionist Alex Lipowski, violinists Francis Liu and Tema Watstein, violists Margaret Dyer and Nathan Schram, cellists Mariel Roberts and Mindy Asher, and conductor Martin Piecuch.

I think of this concert as a coming-together of many talented people to produce a performance at the highest level.  Not surprisingly, such a thing is very expensive!  Everybody involved does this for a living, and I need to be able to pay New York rates.  Therefore, the bulk of the money raised will go to the performers themselves.  The next costliest factor is the hall—Cary Hall in the DiMenna Center is a beautiful space with an ideal acoustic, room for dancers to perform, a Steinway D piano, and wiring for audio/video.  Smaller expenses include recording, the after-concert reception, and publicity.  Furthermore, I believe it vital to keep this performance free to the public.

Please consider making a TAX-DEDUCTIBLE contribution at whatever level is comfortable for you.  I've got some pretty cool perks lined up (if I may say so myself), including CDs, DVDs, and at the high end, the opportunity to commission new music!  So I hope you'll help by donating, forwarding this link to other people, and of course, coming to the concert.  Thanks in advance!
