R&D

A space for every-day innovation

Interisland Terminal is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization. Contributions for the purposes of Interisland Terminal must be made payable to Fractured Atlas and are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.

Where do you go to be Creative?

R&DYou solve problems every day. Many of them are easy, accessible solutions. but big, systemic, or chronic problems require something more. How do you access the additional perspective required to see situations differently? What place can you go to that provides the environment and all the resources necessary to support you in pursuit of something innovative? R&D is a small storefront in Kakaako, Honolulu that was designed specifically for this purpose.

A Resource for Honolulu

Innovations in business, art, tech, science enrich the communities that develop them. Interisland Terminal is an organization that believes exposure to and engagement with the arts stimulate the creativity that generates those innovations. R&D is a commitment to that idea, and gives Honolulu and unique resource in a competitive world.

Make a Statement

Your vision of Honolulu is as bold as ours. We've found a space, developed a design, and planned programs for R&D, but only your participation can take us to the finish line. Tell the community you believe in their creative potential, and transform a storefront in Kakaako into something revitalizing and fresh.

Transform

Small Donations Matter

We want you to be a part of this, and for as little as 10 dollars, you can announce your support in a big way. Each dollar you contribute will fund our "equipping" of the space. Help us fill this space with tools you would want to use!

Help us fill this space with tools you would want to use

The more we are able to raise, the more tools [whiteboards, references, presentation screens, 3d printers, lasers!] we can provide to our community. And by we, we mean you.

    R&D Concept in Detail

Programs // Interisland Terminal's continuing international contemporary art, design and film programming, community organized portfolio reviews, work demos, creative office hours

Presence // Occupy and inhabit the space, meet with other talent, watch the creative processes and working styles of other people

Amenities // Handcrafted artisan coffee, art, design, architecture bookstore, curated collection of design items

R&D is a space where you can be inspired and have breakthroughs. It is a space that redefines the working hour and recognizes that inspiration strikes at all times. Most of all, R&D will have a sense of place, a visual and architectural identity.

We've found a space on Auahi Street in Kakaako, and Architects Kevin Miyamura of Kevin Miyamura Associates and Mark Little of 8 Inc. have designed an exciting environment with well-lit spaces, power and access for creatives of all types. A bookstore with arts, design, architecture and culinary titles will serve as a constant source for inspiration, and a coffee bar serving Stumptown and Hawaii-grown coffees will give it a stimulating, social dimension. Whether its designing a new service for your best customers; developing a new tool for your IT systems; or taking your art in a new direction, at R&D you can test your abilities to think differently every day. However, only your help will make it a reality.

Your contribution of 10, 20, 50 to 200 dollars will help pay for building materials and much needed constructions services to transform a vacant storefront into a community co-working arts and innovation hub.

    Who is Interisland Terminal?

Interisland TerminalFounded in 2009, Interisland Terminal is a Honolulu-based organization whose mission is to present international contemporary art, design and film and advance the role of the arts in innovation.

In our first two years, we have presented numerous contemporary art, film and design programs at various borrowed and sponsored locations in Honolulu. This summer, we heighten our commitment to Honolulu's creative community, as well as to our belief that arts beget innovation, and that innovation as a necessity for Honolulu's future. Our solution is to open a space that we call R&D.
