Our Story

Hugh OBrian Youth Leadership  of Washington has been offering leadership development programs to high school sophomores throughout the state since 1980 first with an Eastern Washington seminar and a Western Washington seminar.  There has been a combined Washington State seminar since 2007.   

HOBY Washington offers leadership opportunities for youth and adults alike. As a state affiliate of HOBY International (www.hoby.org), our all-volunteer team in Washington State works year-long to support the annual HOBY Washington Leadership Seminar in the spring. We also support the HOBY WA Alumni Club.

The Impact

Each year, more than 100 high school sophomore leaders from around the state of Washington come together for a life-changing experience.  These young leaders spend four days learning and collaborating toward a brighter future for the state of Washington and our nation by participating in leadership development exercises, listening to powerful guest speakers, volunteering in the community, and building life-long relationships.

At the end of the seminar, each leader commits herself or himself to completing at least 100 hours of community service to pass on their HOBY experience to their community.  High School ambassadors go on to complete service in their schools, their churches, and in their wider community, often collaborating with service clubs like Lions and Kiwanis to further extend their impact.  Because of the experience they had at the HOBY Seminar, Ambassadors have contributed an estimated 200,000 hours of community service to their communities throughout the state of Washington.

What We Need & What You Get

The HOBY Washington seminar costs roughly $200 per student ambassador, largely used to cover food, lodging, and materials throughout the four day leadership seminar.  Our goal here is to raise enough to cover the seminar expenses for 25% of our ambassadors!

To give you a sense of where your money is going,

$20 will buy a meal during the seminar for three ambassadors

$100 will cover one student's lodging for the entire seminar

$200 will cover one student's entire seminar experience!
