WHAT IS 'RAPID FIRE THEATRE'?
Rapid Fire Theatre is one of Canada's most well respected improv institutions, bringing improvised comedy to Edmonton's audiences for 30 years and counting! Eleven years ago, we began running a festival each June, focusing on improv comedy; IMPROVAGANZA was born! In recent years, our festival has expanded to include sketch comedy, stand-up, music and video as well, and 2011's festival promises to be the best one yet! Our festival is beloved by our loyal audiences, as well as respected by improvisors far and wide; it is the largest of its kind in North America.
WHY SHOULD I CARE ABOUT IMPROVAGANZA?
IMPROVAGANZA is staple in Edmonton's summer festival line up. We bring Edmontonian audiences ten days world-class comedy that they would not normally experience in our city, and we also offer workshops for the public. We've had visiting guests from as far away as Japan, Germany, and Columbia, and from as close as Winnipeg and Regina!
IMPROVAGANZA forges connections between improvisors and comedians around the world. It is a learning opportunity with peer workshops being run throughout, and new ideas being shared and created - it is through meetings like this, that the artform of improvisational theatre becomes more broadly acknowledged and respected.
IMPROVAGANZA acts as a developmental tool for our year-round ensemble at Rapid Fire Theatre. By working with international guests, our current ensemble grows, and in turn, add more to Edmonton's rich and diverse arts community.
WHERE DOES MY MONEY GO?
Your generous donation goes directly to artists! Not to the fat cats running Rapid Fire Theatre!
As you can well imagine, putting on an international festival comes with its expenses; international flights costs a pretty penny, and often times our guests are unable to fund these flights themselves. We also believe in hospitality; we put our guests up in modest accommodations (the best we can afford), and try and cover as much food and drink as we can for them. Your contribution will go directly to funding these costs.
Over the past two years, government funding for our festival has been insufficient, and some grants we had relied on in the past have disappeared completely. Rapid Fire Theatre has been faced with the challenge of trying to keep Improvaganza Canada's largest improv festival, while doing so with reduced funding. That's where you come in - we want to keep our festival one of the best in the world; for Edmontonians and for the international comedy community alike!
