The Story Behind "How They Smiled"

Nicolas Wendl and Zak Griffler have been working on a short 8 page script entitled How They Smiled for the past 3 months. They were inspired by the idea of the power of words and the mysterious possibilities that an ancient typewriter could bear. As they were working out the backbone of the story, they realized that often in life it is important to know when to let go, and move on with your life, and thus, they have developed a screenplay about exactly that.

How They Smiled is the story of a successful New York author who prepares to move from his home and put a tragic accident behind him. But the allure of the past forces him to choose between a new beginning with an encouraging fan of his work and a desire to utilize his talent in a capacity that will change his world forever.

Think Steven King's MISERY meets THE SIXTH SENSE.

Nicolas Wendl is the director of this film. Having been raised in both France and Germany, and now studying at Chapman University, Nicolas has come a long way in his endeavors of becoming a film director. His ambitious attitude and eye for story are going to help make this screenplay a visual and emotional journey for all ages.

The Impact

This film is about a father's never ending grief and his struggle to let go of the ones he loved. It is supposed to remind us about how short life can be, while also showing us that life must go on. On the other hand our goal is also to show how powerful words can be and how when misused, can go very wrong. We want our audience to realize that sometimes it is better to move on and look towards the future rather than being stuck in the memory of the past.
The completion of this project is very dear to all of us. Not only is it part of our degree in film production, it is also a major milestone in our goals of becoming compelling filmmakers. Without your financial contribution, important elements of this production such as permits, SAG paperwork and locations could not be possible, and this project would not be able to reach its full potential.

What We Need & What You Get

Your support for this project is means a lot to us. Being a student project, our funds are rather limited, and your contribution to this project would help us access more professional equipment for Camera and lighting, as well as enable us to secure more appropriate locations for filming. Since the script call for a specific look and feel, the lighting and locations are crucial in order to convey the proper tone of the story.

Your financial contribution will be rewarded in different ways depending on how much money you donate to our production. Any contribution will guarantee you a DVD copy of the film along with a complete press kit and autographed photos.
