Synopsis:

You’ve just arrived home after a bad day…Scratch that…You’ve just arrived home after a bad month. You’re broke, despite being too busy to shower most mornings. You’re lonely, even though you live in the biggest city in America. Generally speaking, you’re in a funk (and not just from lack of bathing). You do, however, have one cause for mild optimism. You seem to have captured the attention of an intriguing young lady. You’ve rushed home this particular evening to clean your apartment before she comes over. In your haste, you see that you have missed a call. There is a voicemail. She says, she won’t be seeing you tonight…How Would You Feel? drops you in the shoes of an eccentric young artist, as thoughts, emotions, and memories, race through his mind during this singular moment in time.

Starring, Terence Nance (writer/director), and Namik Minter (who was unaware that she was cast as herself), How Would You Feel? offers a poignant and humorous look at the deep-seated roots of our feelings.

What makes How Would You Feel different:  This Project is narrated in the second person as a means of implicating the audience in the story, an attempt to restructure the viewing paradigm from voyeuristic to participatory. Within this pursuit, the film is an epic question, consistently inquiring of the audience, “how would you feel?” given this odd series of actual events. The “lover’s” story balloons and warps into a parable that warns against the dangers of trying to love someone who doesn’t love you. As well, their real life experiences testify to the futility of resisting this same indulgence. The film is at once the unfiltered truth, and a shameless lie in that the main character, unbeknownst to her, was manipulated into playing herself. The overarching goal is to re-orient how audiences experience narratives. This is achieved by: experimenting with structure, blurring the line between documentary and narrative, communicating the ideas in a variety of media and settings, and allowing audiences to contribute their own stories. A part of the films vision is to forge a participatory relationship with audiences that transcends and improves upon the traditional voyeuristic relationship. To this end, part of the funding would be used to build a community website to accompany the film. The site would allow our audience to “trade circumstances.” Users would be asked to upload a piece of media: text, video, pictures, or sounds, that proposes a “circumstance” that begins with the phrase “How would you feel?” (i.e. a sentence that reads, “how would you feel - if gas cost 8 dollars a gallon…”)This portal would “crowdsource1” a mixed media film: free, viral in nature, created by the public, infinitely re-mixable, and constantly growing online. Volume one of “How Would You Feel?” will exist on the site as a featured entry. The site would serve as an invaluable tool to build an audience for the film as we complete post-production.As with interactive media, music is an integral part of the film thematically, as well as a key ingredient in attracting our target audience. The soundtrack is comprised of 24 songs, each corresponding to a scene in the film. Each song will be re-arranged for use as dramatic under score creating a link between the soundtrack and film. Additionally, the grant would enable us to produce screenings where the soundtrack is performed live. We will also orchestrate collaborations where, media uploaded to the site from a certain city is edited into the film when screened in that city.
