Our Story

Last year, I started the first film festival to spotlight the horror genre in the city of San Diego. Horrible Imaginings serves the dual purpose of giving exposure to upcoming filmmakers, as well as showcasing revivals of classic horror pictures. I also curate a full art gallery of dark or macabre artwork during the event. Last year, the "Haunted Gallery" was very popular and some local artist were able to make sales. Adding the art gallery to the film festival really created another dimension to Horrible Imaginings.

The video gives some insight into last year's event.

The Impact

Horrible Imaginings takes place in an area of downtown San Diego that is still run down and in need of development. The few local businesses that remain are thrilled that an event like this will be happening in the neighborhood. The local art community is happy to have a place to showcase art of a darker nature, which is often stigmatized or ignored.

In addition to adding interest to the region, this film festival is the only one that gives exposure to films in the horror genre. Many new filmmakers have a high regard for the genre, and use it to demonstrate their film making abilities. Without Horrible Imaginings, these filmmakers would have no venue in the entire city of San Diego.

I have also screened many classic revival films. These include Peeping Tom, The Beyond, Bride of Frankenstein, Christmas Evil, and Night of the Living Dead. I am surprised every time at how many of my audience is getting their first exposure to these films at my event. I am proud that their first time seeing these films could be on the big screen!

What We Need & What You Get

Last year, I did a campaign on Kickstarter for Horrible Imaginings. It was my first event, and I had underestimated the huge cost of putting on such an event. Though, I made my modest goal, I still had to spend my entire savings account to make the show a possibility. This year, my savings account has far less in it than it had last year. I do have some funding options, but this Indie Go Go campaign is a really important part of the puzzle. I would rather not have to fund raise like this, but if you are from out of town and would like to show your support, donating the cost of a ticket would be a great way to go!

I'm not asking for one penny more than this event is going to cost me:

$1,500 alone is going to the venue rental for two full days in a four-story building in downtown San Diego.
$400 goes to event liability insurance.
$600 goes to screening rights for the revival films.
$200 goes to equipment rental.
$800 goes to promotion, printing, and other incidentals like food license and decorations.

Obviously, the more we get, the better the event will be because all money will go into the festival. Remember, many film festivals have an entire committee. This one is just me--most funding and work comes from my pocket and my passion for the genre. I really could use your help!
