At the turn of the 20th Century America was perceived by the world as a champion of human rights and individual liberty who had won freedom from the British Empire. The young Vietnamese patriot, Nguy?n i Qu?c, later known as Ho Chi Minh, came to America to gain her alliance against the French Colonialist. Thinking that America would be sympathetic to the anti-colonialist cause Quoc spent 6 years in the US before moving onto France. Along the way he discovers a world of radical agitation against colonialism, racism, and imperialism at sea as a merchant seaman. He eventually settles in the US in 1912-1918 living in Harlem,Brooklyn and Boston.
In this documentary, I examine the attraction of the youg Quoc to this nascent black nationalist movement and what he learned about American through his association with black nationalism in America,
