Our Story
Karen Lucas is known to millions of television viewers across Africa as Kaz from the hit TV reality show 'Project Fame', where she was infamous for her quirky and sometimes controversial antics. Her vivacious nature, charismatic stage presence, and mesmerizing soulful vocals continuously impressed the panel of judges, and she was one of the last contestants to be voted off.
Over the years and as a result of her hard work and great talent, Kaz has been recognized by her peers for her artistry. In 2005, she won the East African Kisima award for Best Afro Fusion Artist of the Year, and in 2006, she was honored to receive the African Kora award for Most Promising Female Artist in Africa. She was also recently nominated for best actress in the 'Kalasha awards'. Kenya's first film award ceremony, for a short movie she starred in which was released late last year.
She has now decided to take her talent to another level by perfecting her skill. She has been awarded a part scholarship at AMDA (The American Musical And Dramatic Academy)http://www.amda.edu/
and needs all the support to help her one foot closer to her dream. The money will help her pay for her first year of schooling and housing and her efforts here in Kenya will help secure her second and final year.
The Impact
Kaz is actively involved in giving back to society. She has organized and participated in shows to raise
money for the Nairobi Womens Hospital and Kenya Breast Health Programme, of which she is volunteer
advocating breast cancer awareness. Her benevolence continues in all her endeavors including working
with USAID during the Umoja Pamoja campaign, and promoting peaceful and non violent voting in Kenya. 2010 has
led Kaz to continue her generosity where she has worked with the Hemophilia society of Kenya and the
Refugee Consortium of Kenya both raising money for the less fortunate.
This is the beginning of a continuous journey to enrich Kenyans through art and culture. Her long term goals being the ability to empower people and building educational facilities for young Kenyans in the arts in order for them to then carry forward the same.
She needs to develop these skills and bring them back to her people
What We Need & What You get
School housing and tuition for a year is $35,149
I have a $5,000 scholarship
Which leaves $30,149
I have family and friends on this end who are slowly donating money and I will keep updating every time someone comes in with a pledge.
Once I get half of that, I will send it to my school in order to pay for the first semester.
Once I can pay for the first Semester however, I will be able to leave Kenya and head to the BIG apple.
Yes I am owning it. It is MY school. So please help me get there
Other Ways You Can Help
Please help spread the word. Anything will do. If 30,000 people donated a dollar each, I would get o school much faster. Share this with all you know and all who are into supporting the performing arts sector.
Give thanks!
