Our Story

The mission of Positive Sport Coaching is to educate and encourage positive attitudes and behaviors in all athletic events by coaches, parents, administrators, media, fans and players.

Positive Sport Coaching is a non-profit (501 (c) 3) founded in 1993.  At present, over 8,609  coaches and 1,343 parents have received training and certification from Positive Sport Coaching. Roughly translated, that is over 96,881 young athletes per year who benefit in positive ways as a result of their coaches and parents training by Positive Sport Coaching.  However, it is important to note that less than 1% of the three million coaches in the United States receive any type of coaching education.  Training, and the means to provide it, is critically needed.

Positive Sport Coaching educates individuals on the importance of respect, non-discrimination, the fun aspects of sport, and the satisfaction of doing one's best.  Our programs continue to fulfill the critical need for education in youth sports.  Coaches of sport are teaching our youth valuable life lessons. Participation in sport helps the young person build positive self-expression, a strong work ethic, morals and cooperation through team building.  The Positive Sport Coaching programs include sports philosophy, motivation, skills, health, nutrition, management and abuse recognition and prevention.

The Impact

Factual studies about sports abuse:

45.3% of young athletes surveyed said they have been called names, yelled at while playing sports

21.5% said they have been pressured to play with an injury

17.5% said that they have been hit, kicked or slapped by a coach

3.4% said they have been pressured into sex or sexually molested

 (Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission)

A major barrier in solving the problem of abuse is that many coaches are not clear what behaviors constitute maltreatment of abuse.  Most recognize that behaviors once considered by many to be acceptable are now considered to be racist, sexist, harassing, or abusive.  No wonder coaches are confused about not only what not to do, but what to do.  When the people who should be guiding young athletes are emotionally, physically, or sexually abusive, a hostile and destructive environment can occur.  This can erode self-esteem, confidence and trust not only by the players, but by parents as well.

Our Goals and Objectives

We have the programs in place and they are fine tuned.  It's time to get the message out to the three million plus coaches and 26 million sport parents.  You can help with this important message with your contribution.  Positive Sport Coaching has a plan to broadcast this valuable information and training to the schools, clubs and recreation centers in the United States.  Includes the parents, coaches administrators and the young athlete.     All these organizations have a legal responsibility to prevent and eliminate sports abuse from there programs.
