Our Story
In 2010, at age
103, Dr. Charles H. Hap Fisher established a scholarship fund
in conjunction with The Cabell Brand Center. The fund provides
financial assistance to dedicated college students determined to make
a genuine difference in society through the service of the common
good.
As a result of Hap
Fishers generosity, the 501(c)(3) program has now expanded from
one scholarship to five, allowing students to explore both
theoretical and practical solutions to some of the nations most
persistent problems. Those needs will continue to pose severe
challenges.
Applicants compete
through submission of essays that examine some particularly vexing
civic problem from poverty to environmental protection to
education to health care to social justice and propose thoughtful
new approaches to their resolution.
Although Hap Fisher
died this year at age 104, his legacy of caring about what James
Madison called the inter-generational compact lives on in this
scholarship that bears his name. This appeal seeks $20,000 to
supplement that fund in an effort to bolster among young people a
spirit of determined involvement and to urge among them the
commitment to think globally and act locally.
The Impact
The future of the country soon will
pass into the hands of our young people. Their success and our common
destiny will depend upon how well-prepared they are to assume the
responsibilities before them. This scholarship program encourages
young people to accept the challenges of diminishing poverty,
promoting the environment, and advancing peace and justice. They will
need help your help to acquire the knowledge and skills to
become tomorrows leaders.
What We Need & What You Get
Our goal is to add $20,000 to the existing scholarship funds to give more scholarships away to the next round of applicants. These additional funds will continue the impact of Hap's legacy, reaching more students each year. Your donation to this fund drive will provide more students the opportunity to make a difference in their community with projects demonstrating the creative and thoughtful approaches to the problems of our times.
