Haiti: We Are Rebuilding

Help Haitian students create a youth community center in Port-au-Prince.

Our Story

We are FAD Haiti, a collective of over 50 Haitian university students, professionals, and artists, dedicated to rebuilding our country better and stronger than before the earthquake.

We believe that to do this, our countrys youth need to engage themselves in our communities, and across the country.

The Team

FAD (Fonds D'Actions Pour le Dveloppement) is a registered non-profit in Haiti.  Since 2005, we have come together every week to run a program of social education, life skills, and creative activities for the children of Cite Soleil and Bas Delmas, some of the poorest neighborhoods in our country.

The program has been growing every month, with true community support.  Now is the time to build a permanent center for our work, right in the heart of Port-au-Prince.

The center will be a place where youth can come together in a supportive community to learn arts, business, and social skills, create, share their talents, and become leaders in their own communities.

We have the volunteers.  We have the skills.  We have a plan.

What we need now is $7,500 to launch our center.  The funding will allow us to the lease the land and building, buy furniture, supplies and learning materials, stock our kitchen, and open our doors to hundreds of kids every week.

The Impact

Over the past ten months, donors have witnessed -- and we have lived -- the limits of the international recovery effort in Haiti.  Today, most aid groups are still focused on basic survival efforts in Haiti, including the provision of food, water, and shelter.

We want to do more than survive; we want to build a better country.

More than 1/2 of our countrys population are under 18.  We believe that these youth, as much as the government and outside NGOs, can play a leading role our country's reconstruction.

Our center will help Port-au-Princes youth develop their leadership skills by:

  • One-on-one career and creative mentorship between youth and volunteers
  • Exercises to help kids discover and develop their creative, social, and entrepreneurial talents
  • The development of communication skills -- how to listen actively, speak with self-confidence, and talk to strangers.
  • Invited speakers including members of international NGOs, businesspeople, media, and local leaders

The Center and FADs work are true grassroots initiatives, run by Haitian youth, for Haitian youth.  Over the coming months, we will apply for support and funding to expand our efforts to other cities and regions in Haiti.

For our team, this is just the beginning.

What We Need & What You Get

We're asking for a one-time grant of $7500 to rent the land and building featured in our video for a year, purchase the supplies we need to launch our program, and fund our weekly activities for the next six months.

Here's how the funding will break down:

  • $4000 to rent the land and building for a year
  • $1200 to prepare the space by:
- Clearing the land of weeds and overgrowth to create a sports field and garden
- Painting the building
- Buying benches and tables for the kids
- Buying cooking supplies (pots & pans) to stock our kitchen
- Buying art, teaching, and sports supplies for the weekly activities
  • $1925 to cover six months of weekly meals & activities for for 100-150 youth.
  • $300 for IndieGoGo's 4% commission.

The more money we raise, the more we can do.

Any donations over $7500 will allow us to buy more and better supplies, welcome more kids to the program every week, and continue our activities over the following weeks and months.

As you can see, a little goes a long way in Haiti.  And because we work on an entirely volunteer basis, 100% of your donation will support our efforts on the ground.

What's in it for you?  Donors will receive:

$100 = a thank-you card from the kids
$250 = your name on the community center wall
$500 = original piece of art made by the kids
$1500 = an new Apple iPad to the first $1500 donor (the generous gift of one of our supporters)

and the chance to play a leading role in Haitis grassroots reconstruction.  Our team is ready to get to work: your donations will make a difference within days, not years, on the streets of Port-au-Prince.

Well also be posting regular photo and written updates to IndieGoGo, Facebook, and our website so you can watch the Center grow over the next few weeks.

Other Ways You Can Help

Spread the word.  Tell friends and family about our work; ask them to match your donations through email, Facebook, Twitter, and more.

Volunteer with us.  We are seeking Wordpress programmers & designers to help us rebuild and relaunch our bilingual website.

Pair your classroom with ours.  We are looking for educational partners in 2011.  Do you teach students who want to share stories of their own lives, or learn more about life for youth in Haiti?

Send supplies.  If you are in Haiti or can ship supplies to Port-au-Prince, we welcome selected donations of non-perishable food, furniture, sports equipment, arts supplies, and more.

Become an advisor.  Were a young organization, run entirely by volunteers.  If youre part of a funding agency or organization that can advise us or help us grow, let us know.
