Our Story

HOT/COLD weaves an elliptical, dream-like narrative centered around four adults and an adolescent girl in the wake of a possible affair.  While they are stuck in a purgatory of uncertainty, the film's non-linear structure encourages you to determine whether their fates are justified. Past, present, and future are displaced as we see four different women of all different ages simultaneously mirroring one another's failures and victories, all inextricably linked by the lone male character's observing presence.  Featuring a haunting, minimalist string and piano score by Fort Worth musician Clint Niosi, the film quietly explores the tension between choice, responsibility, loneliness, and disillusionment.  The story breaks through media boundaries as it can be experienced as a live performance piece, a short installation triptych set for gallery exhibition, and finally, a feature length film.

Starring Lauren McCune, Crystal Pate, Morgana Shaw, and John Elliott.  Introducing Riley Templeton.  Written, directed, and produced by Frank Mosley.  Produced by Daniel Laabs, Jan Brandt, and Robby Storey.

The Impact

I want this film to bridge the chasm between passive and active, the art world and narrative film world. In the feature film version the audience periodically observes the wanderings of a young girl whose narrative thread reveals much about the story's adults.  Whereas the shorter, installation version replaces the girl with the audience themselves as they literally explore three cyclical rooms that comprise an interactive gallery exhibit.  Each room contains its own mysterious scene, fraught with tension, and offers the audience an experience similar to a choose your own adventure novel in which they are compelled to examine the "who-done-it" aspect and create their own ideas as to who is responsible for the actions presented.

I intend to challenge the commercial film world by demonstrating that a film can be non-narrative and still provide a trajectory of character development.  On the art scene, I hope to show that the narrative scope of film can still be interpreted openly much like a painting.

I hope this "moving painting" will pull in the audience, not just viewers, but as accomplices.  In this style, we are given enough distance to observe the characters' actions with objectivity, but also an opportunity to approach OURSELVES subjectively.  The characters in the story are breaking free of lifestyles that society deems appropriate for them, of roles they are supposed to play in life.  In this way, people will hopefully see how each little choice they make can have a tremendous effect on themselves and others around them.  And it may leave them asking:  Is there a culpability inherent in the distance of being an observer?

What We Need & What You Get

We'll take anything from you because that means you believe in the idea, and more importantly, in us.  We have an exceptional team of people working on this film that spans from Austin to NYC.  I'm very lucky to have such great, supportive people to collaborate with on this very personal project. Our principal photography is wrapped so please feel free to check out our gallery for production stills.  The financial mark we want to hit covers costs for post-production; editing, coloring, sound design and mixing, as well as the recording and mastering of our official film score.  Any remaining funds will be used for publicity and festival fees.  Our anticipated completion date is late summer in order to make festival deadlines. We plan on submitting the feature film version to all major festivals to start our path to distribution.  Well also submit the shorter, installation cut to various art galleries across the world with the hope that it will find a permanent home.

Feel free to check out the link below to some of my previous works on VIMEO and MUBI.  This includes the trailer for my first feature film, the award-winning HOLD which was an IFP Narrative Labs Finalist, a 2010 Venice Days candidate and was proclaimed one of the best films of 2010 by Rubin Safaya of CINEMALOGUE.  My most recent project, I COULD LIVE IN HOPE, was recently selected for exhibition at the 500X Gallery in Dallas as a looped installation piece.  This provided a nice test-run for my HOT/COLD installations concept.

Just as the point of the finished project is to involve the audience in an interactive way, we also need your involvement in the development stage...to help us create that work.  And even if you can't donate we ask you to spread the word.  Post online via facebook, twitter, or wherever you can.  That is immensely helpful and we are extremely grateful.  For those who are interested we will keep you updated as we start our journey with HOT/COLD.

Thanks for your time.
