Mujeres Ayudando Madres, Women Assisting Mothers (MAM), a Puerto Rican based non-profit organization devoted to promoting maternal health in the community. MAM is a grassroots based entity that seeks to provide services in the maternal period through prenatal & postnatal education, conferences, continued education, and direct assistance to mothers.


Founded in 2007 by Vanessa Caldari, midwife, and community organizer, MAM is a branch of the Sisterhood of Midwives of Puerto Rico (HPPR) and is the Puerto Rican representative of the Latin American and Caribbean Network for the Humanization of Labor and Birth.

 MAMS MISSION

 

Promote concrete changes in public policies that help in the creation of empowerment and

sustainable development of the mothers and families.


Create consciousness and awareness in the communities with regards to the maternal process.


Inform and educate on the evidence based research that defines birthing best practices as stated by

the World Health Organization.


Educate in parenting, family planning and prevention of sexually transmitted infections.


Reduce the incidence of cesarean birth which is at 47% in Puerto Rico one of the highest in the world.


Educate and reduce premature births; PR has highest rates within the USA.


Promote, educate and support the benefits of breastfeeding.


 Promote healthy partnerships throughout the maternal period and there on.


Create leadership programs in low income communities.


Maintain the community center MAM so new mothers have access to healthy foods, doula services,

childbirth classes and support and access to information books, internet services free of cost.


Educate future doulas, perinatal educators, and health professionals.


Use of Donations:


-Complete a promotional documentary about MAM.

-Contract professional grant writers.

-Maintain Community Center: MAMs Headquarters.

-Offer the following services, free or at low cost:


1.               Prenatal classes

2.               Birth and Postpartum Doulas

3.               Breastfeeding Consultation

4.               Vocational Education for Mothers

5.               Childcare

6.        Psychological services  and support for pregnant women, mothers and families

7.         Pediatric services for newborn

8.         Home postpartum visits and referrals.

9.         Lactation consultant services

 

MAM aspires to integrate the concept of maternal health with music and art, we at MAM encourage maternal health through culture. By reaching out to the younger generations, MAM hopes to influence future mothers and fathers.
