Our Story
In South Africa hundreds of schools have no clean drinking water available at their school. The average distance a person living in rural Africa must walk to a water source is 5 km. The average 25Litre container of water weighs approximately 25 kg. It is our intention to provide a sustainable water source for these schools, one at a time.
The Impact
Girls are taken out of school to collect water. A child dies every fifteen seconds from diseases related to unsafe water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene. This results in 6000 preventable deaths of children every day.
What We Need & What You Get
Our focus is about getting a clean water source to as many schools as possible, we may start by simply repairing existing bore holes or upgrading municiple water supplies, but we have identified a pump/system that is simple (Only 2 working parts). It has been used all over the world with great success already. The Playpump is attached to a merry-go-round play equipment that kids use every day. The spinning motion of the equipment (while kids play) allows the pump to pump water from a bore-hole into a large storage container and then to a tap, providing clean drinkable water. It is our intention to complete our 1st project by 16 July 2011. We will be approaching corporate sponsors as well and expect to exceed our funding requirements. If we exceed what we need, we will put that money towards the next school in need of a sustainable water source.
Our ultimate goal is to get Playpump systems to schools that are unlikey to ever get municpal water. They are mostly situated in outliyingrural areas.
