Our Story

Have you ever wondered whether the money you contribute can actually make a difference at all to the cause you're supporting? This time you actually can. I am a filmmaker and writer who just like you wants to make a difference in people's lives and have a meaningful purpose to life. This project I will be participating in has already been making the difference for prevention of illnesses, or sexually transmitted diseases, hygiene, ensuring democratic rights and informing people who have no other source of education than their local community radio station in Guatemala. 

The NGO Cultural Survival has created the Guatemala Radio Project to help keep alive the indgenous languages and customs in Guatemala by broadcasting in the original 73 languages. They educate and inform rural communities that do not understand Spanish and who cannot read nor write in Spanish.  These radio stations are staffed by volunteers who change constantly. Cultural Survival's non-profit partner ArtCorps has invited me to work with this project to train the volunteers in radio broadcasting and scriptwriting, so as to ensure the projects' continuity and sustainability.

La Situacin

Te has preguntado alguna vez si tus contribuciones a organizaciones no gubernamentales tienen algn impacto en las vidas de la gente a la cual quieres apoyar? Pues ahora, podrs ver el resultado de tus contribuciones. Soy una escritora y creadora de documentales que igual que t quiere darle una mano a aquellos que ms lo necesitan a la vez de tener un prposito en la vida ms altruista. Este proyecto en el que voy a participar ya tiene tiempo de estar afectando las vidas de los indgenas guatemaltecos de manera positiva. Las estaciones de radio comunitarias hacen una gran diferencia entre enfermedades y su prevencin, higiene, asegurar derechos demcraticos e informar a personas que no tienen otra fuente de educacin. 

Guatemala esta perdiendo sus idiomas y culturas indigenas a paso muy acelerado. Un grupo no gubernamental llamado Cultural Survival esta luchando por mantenerlas vivas:. Ellos asisten a las radios comunitarias que transmiten en los idiomas indigenas para aquellos guatemaltecos que no entienden o no hablan bien el castellano. Proveen un servicio educacional a comunidades rurales y analfabetas. Las transmisoras no tienen fondos para pagar a empleados y son administradas por voluntarios. El grupo Cultural Survival me ha invitado a participar en el proyecto como artista capacitando a los voluntarios y entrenndolos a capacitar a otros para trabajar en la radio. 

The Impact

If I do not raise the funds that I need to participate in the project, ArtCorps and Cultural Survival will be unable to ensure that these community radio stations continue operating independently. Cultural Survival is busy advocating for a change to Guatemala's broadcasting laws that will allow community radio stations to broadcast legally. ArtCorps has recruited me and Monika Navarro to participate in this project. Monika begins the initial planning and execution of the project in January this year, but I am scheduled to take over from Monika in September of this year to finish implementing the plan which will allow indigenous volunteers to train each other in a way that accords with their learning methods. I need to be able to book the flight in February and to contribute the rest of the $1000 deposit to ensure the continuity the project. If I cannot participate, Cultural Survival and the Mayans of Guatemala will be left in the lurch and may not be able to continue broadcasting. 

El Impacto

Si no puedo participar en Septiembre del 2011, el proyecto no podr continuar. Cultural Survival esta abogando por los Mayas guatemaltecos con el gobierno de Guatemala para que legisle otorgando licencias de transmisin a las radios comunitarias. La organizacin ArtCorps me ha contratado a m y a Monika Navarro para contribuir a esta proyecto. Monika comenzar la planificacin del proyecto en Enero del 2011 y yo continuar su labor en Septiembre de este ao. Yo acabar ejecutando el proyecto que asistir a los indgenas guatemaltecos a entrenarse los unos a los otros en las capacidades necesarias para voluntarear en las transmisoras de radio usando mtodos de enseanza que acorden con su forma de aprendizaje. Necesito poder reservar y pagar el vuelo en Febrero y terminar de poner el depsito de $1000 con ArtCorps para asegurar que podr participar en el proyecto. Si no logro hacerlo, Cultural Survival y los Mayas guatemaltecos no podrn continuar transmitiendo su programacin en el futuro. 

What We Need

Here's the nuts and bolts. With just a minimum contribution of $10 per person, I can raise $5000 US to:

(a) pay for a return airfare from Australia to Guatemala valued at $2500;

(b) a $1000 refundable security deposit required as a commitment to the project by ArtCorps and 

(c) $1500 in administration costs, like local transport between all the comunities in Guatemala. 

The hosting NGOs, ArtCorps and Cultural Survival will provide me with insurance, food and accommodation, as well as $1000 towards costs of the project itself. I will also be seeking funds from Australian government organisations that support artist's residencies. However, these grants are highly competitive, so there is no guarantee that the grant applications will succeed. 

Lo Que Se Necesita

Solamente con $10 contribuidos por cada persona podr reunir $5000 EEUU para:

(a) pagar un vuelo de ida y vuelta de Australia ( a dnde vivo) a Guatemala que se cotiza en $2500

(b) darle un depsito de $1000 EEUU a ArtCorp para asegurar mi compromiso con el proyecto y 

(c) costos administrativos de $1500 EEUU como el transporte local en Guatemala de pueblo a pueblo.

Las dos organizaciones que asisten al proyecto, ArtCorps y Cultural Survival, me proporcionarn seguro mdico, alojamiento y comida, adems de $1000 de presupuesto para el proyecto. Tambin estoy solicitando fondos gubernamentales en Australia dedicados a residencias artsticas internacionales. Sin embargo, estas solicitudes no tienen garanta de ser otorgadas y por estoy tratando de reunir dinero ac.
