What’s the Story?
Walk the dry golden hills of Oakland, CA on any summer day and you’ll come across the city’s hungriest and least discriminating four-legged employees as they work to guard the area against the threat of wildfire. Goatherder a short film, introduces Henderson, an awkward and eccentric goatherd who longs for a deeper connection to the city and the people he works to protect. A chance meeting with Hazel – Henderson’s impatient career-oriented urban double – brings a possibly life changing interaction that provokes questions about where our food comes from and how we relate to nature and each other.

How will it be made?
For Goatherder we hope that the story will in some way become the process. This means actively pursuing a sustainable production model. Films even at the largest scales are short term projects, expediency often rules the day, and the process can be wasteful, and even unhealthy (just ask anyone who works in film about how many times they’ve had to eat cheap pizza for dinner). All to frequently this is the more so the case in independent films, but a sustainable and healthy filmmaking process is possible with supporters. This means forgoing waste generators like ubiquitous plastic water bottles, and disposable dinnerware. It will also affect the food we eat on set, organic and locally grown produce and other foods.
Part of the expense of making this film, and one of the reasons we need your help is that we have allocated funds to; have a dedicated crew member to do composting and recycling, also to purchase bpa free plastic or stainless steel reusable canteens, and working with local grocers to purchase locally grown foods and produce.
