Our Story

It all started when a survivor of the 1994 Rwandan genocide came to our school.  Accompanied by students from Harwood Union High School in Waterbury, Vermont, who had travelled to Rwanda the previous year, Valentina spoke about her experiences. We were moved by her account of things too horrific for us to even imagine.  And yet, she lives with a positive outlook, always a smile on her face.   Learning more about the incredible work done by the Harwood students inspired us to form the Global Citizenship Project.  Thanks to the hard work of our team, six students and four educators from Woonsocket High School will be joining the Vermont students as they travel again to Kigali, Rwanda in February, 2012.

The Impact

As we prepare for our journey, and learn about Rwandan culture, we are moved by the stories we hear and read, stories about survival. forgiveness. perseverance. acceptance. coexistence.   We bring with us a desire to share - to share our stories, our culture, and our resources.  Armed with books, shoes, and water filters, we will visit schools, orphanages, and farms, while staying with generous host families, all of whom are orphans of the genocide.  We will work side by side with our new friends during Umaganda, the monthly Rwandan National Day of Service.  Throughout our trip, we will be collecting more stories - photographs, videos, interviews and journals that will be combined to create a documentary film of our experience.  When we return to Rhode Island, this documentary will be the centerpiece of presentations at schools and local community organizations that will raise awareness of the genocide and the incredible progress that the Rwandan people have made in the 17 years since.

What We Need & What You Get

The impact of your contribution is immeasurable. We are working hard at raising money locally, but our expenses are $3000 per person, including airfare, and on the ground costs paid directly to our Rwandan guides. We need your help!  Your money will help deliver shoes to Rwandans who lack them. It will help us give books to children who have never had the opportunity to read. It will be used to deliver water filters to people who have never had clean water.  Your donation will make our work possible, and give hope to the children who need it most. Not to mention the FABULOUS perks!

Other Ways You Can Help

No contribution is too small! We appreciate any help you can give us.  And if you aren't able to help us, but know someone who can, please share this page with them.  Post it, mail, send it far and wide! You will be rewarded in the afterlife. :)
