Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc. is in its 4th year of supporting and promoting women musicians, globally. We've garnered over $50,000 in memberships, grants and donations. We have 140 members, 62 musicians, 25 men and 6 students. We've produced several events in the South Florida community at schools, senior centers and cultural venues. See our photo gallery.
The Impact
We're moving rapidly around the world with women in music (musical members).
Our organization is an International Honor Committee Member with Donne in Musica in Italy. This organization is 30 years old and has hundreds of women musicians on their roster. We're working to create a cultural exchange with their members.
Lauderhill, Florida, is building a state-of-the-arts performing arts center to be completed by January 2013. An international cultural exchange is the priority of the City Commissioners, two are members of our organization - Comm. Hayward Benson and Comm. Ken Thurston.
On May 14, we're having a fundraiser to raise airfare for flights to Rome, Italy because on June 23, our members will join the delegation from the City of Lauderhill and Lauderhill Sister Cities visiting the City of Fiuggi, Italy, where Donne in Musica has an office. This invitation from Fiuggi's Mayor Fabrizio Martini to Mayor Richard Kaplan of Lauderhill was initiated by WOMEN IN JAZZ SOUTH FLORIDA, INC. because of our affiliation with Donne in Musica.
We have several international members: Beverly Lewis in Rome/Umbria, Saskia Laroo and Warren Byrd in Holland, Amanda Sedgwick from Sweden and now Eunice Jose in Angola, plus, your representative Carolina Paraventi from Brazil became a member!
What We Need & What You Get
Our goal is to create a touring fund for our musicians. This, of course, is extremely costly with the price of airline tickets skyrocketing. This year, we need two to four tickets for our members to join the delegation described above. Tickets to Rome, Italy are ranging from $1,200 to $1,800. Plus, we need hotel, ground transportation and meals for one week. If you are an individual, you can get a lifetime membership for your donation of $300 or more. If you are a business owner, for the price of an airline ticket, your company's logo on our banner as we travel from place to place will garner you advertisement in an international arena.
