In a country where schooling is a luxury, playing and artistic activities are a rarity. Against all odds, Phymean Noun founded the NGO People Improvement Organization (PIO) and built three schools in at-risk neighbourhoods. To date, approximately 800 children are now enrolled in PIOs schools. Phymean was named CNNs Hero in 2010. Touched by the work of Phymean with the children, CORPUS initiated a dialogue with Phymean to facilitate PIOs students access to an arts education.
Now a dream come true, in November 2011, CORPUS will perform Les moutons in two of the schools. Les moutons is a CORPUS' classic which has been performed all over the world in renowned street theatre festivals and children festivals.
In addition to these performances, Carolin Lindner, a theatre educator, will teach a two-week workshop to PIO children creating a short play to be performed alongside CORPUS Les moutons. The workshops concept, Object Theatre, is to ask each kid to bring one object found at the dump (an empty coke can, a comb, a shoe, whatever they choose) and imagine a story about the objects history, desires, and thoughts. The story will be told from the point of view of the object.
CORPUS performers will also offer a series of initiation classes: vocals, hip hop and contemporary dance.
Finally, CORPUS is bringing along one Canadian youth, Maysam Ghani, from The Esplanade (Toronto) for a very unique experience. She will be taking the workshops with PIO children and will discover Cambodian culture. Her "mission" is to share her experience with her classmates and her community once back in Toronto.
With your support, we will be able to cover traveling costs occurring while in Cambodia such as food and hotel for our crew of 7 people ($1,500) - our flight tickets are already bought! Our objective is also to be able to leave with PIO not only an amazing experience for the kids there but also a cheque ($1,500) for them to be able to buy school material to improve schooling conditions.
