Mission
To secure funds to support the coming of world-renowned electronic music, sound and installation artists Mark Fell and Richard Chartier to Artisphere for a live concert on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at 8:00pm.
Background
Artisphere is a new breed of urban arts center in Arlington, Virginia that features four performance venues, three visual art galleries, a 4,000 square foot ballroom and free Wi-Fi. Artispheres wide array of programming ranges from contemporary visual art, live music and film to new media, theatre and salsa dancing. Artisphere has an ongoing commitment to serve as a forum for innovative new media that encourages visitors to discover and experience art through sensory touch, sound and feel.
In keeping with that commitment, Artisphere selected internationally renowned sound artist Richard Chartier to bring together a celebrated group of international artists, Caleb Coppock (U.S.), Mark Fell (U.K.), Andy Graydon (U.S./Germany), Ryoji Ikeda (Japan), and France Jobin (Canada), for Data/Fields, a thought-provoking new media exhibit which explores the connection between the viewer and the flow and transfer of data. (Data/Fields is on exhibit at Artisphere from Thursday, September 22 Sunday, November 27, 2011.) These Selected and commissioned works act as hubs of sensory informationsites of signal, noise, presence, and absence.
In connection with the exhibit Data/Fields, Artisphere has the opportunity to showcase exhibiting artist, Mark Fell and Curator Richard Chartier in a live performance.
About the Artists
Mark Fell (b. 1966) is a musician and artist based in Sheffield, England. For the past decade, Fell has been one of the leading innovators in the fields of experimental electronic music and sound art, exploring the relationships between geometry, color and waveform. His work has been performed and exhibited internationally to wide critical acclaim. He is best known for his collaborative work with Mat Steel under the project name SND and a string of seminal releases on the German record label Mille Plateaux. Although Fell is keen to describe his work as non-intellectual his activities are to a large extent informed by ongoing interests in contemporary philosophy particularly the philosophy of technology; theories of perception, action and consciousness; and mathematical treatments of time and space.
Richard Chartier (b. 1971), sound and installation artist, is considered one of the key figures in the current of reductionist electronic sound art which has been termed both "microsound" and Neo-Modernist. Chartier's minimalist digital work explores the inter-relationships between the spatial nature of sound, silence, focus, perception and the act of listening itself. Chartier's sound works/installations have been presented in galleries and museums internationally and he has performed his work live across Europe, Japan, Australia, and North America at digital art/electronic music festivals and exhibits. In 2000 he formed the recording label LINE and has since curated its continuing documentation of compositional and installation work by international sound artists/composers exploring the aesthetics of contemporary and digital minimalism. In 2010 he was awarded a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship.
About the Performance
Mark Fell will be performing works from his album Multistability. Multistability is primarily an exploration of erratic and non-regular rhythmic patterns. In the field of Gestalt psychology the term multistability refers to the effect where one is unable to perceive a single stable object within complex or ambiguous patterns. In systems theory it describes a condition that is neither stable nor instable, where a system switches between different states. Fell has taken these as a starting point for his project, developing compositional structures and strategies that transform and transcend the familiar.

For this event, Richard Chartier intends to perform excerpts from his release "Fields for Mixing" created primarily from field recordings from around the world. This performance will also incorporate new field recordings from his recent trip to Iceland. He brings the physicality of space directly into his compositional practice. In Fields for Mixing he utilizes the unique properties of these spaces to create a newly defined acoustic space one that resonates with his characteristic treatments.
